My Mental Health

So, I finally made the call and scheduled an appointment with a psychiatrist, well it ended up being a psychiatric nurse practitioner, but it amounts to the same thing. That was not an easy call to make, especially since I first had to call my insurance company to find out what psychiatrists are covered; I also had to tell them why I was seeking ( Read more... )

I love her comparison to Diabetes.

We should talk some time about depression - probably one of the few things I've struggled with that I've never really shared with you. I've been battling it since I was 11; my brother's death fucked up my brain at a formative time (hello, puberty) and basically I've been stuck in various stages of depression since then (sometimes mild, sometimes horrifyingly deep).

*hugs* I love you and I'm glad you're getting the help you need. I wish more than ever that I were close by so I could be more helpful.

I'm soooo proud of you. Asking for help can sometimes be the hardest part of the journey. My mom has been depressed since I was little and won't get help for it--my sister and I still encourage her a few times a year. It really colored my childhood and I wonder what kind of difference it would've made then (and even now!) if she'd gotten help. When you're not getting outside help, the partner and kids (at least in my case) often feel the weight of it because they feel like THEY should be helping but they don't know how. Depression become a family's burden almost as much as the individual's. The fact that you are taking hold of this and taking steps to get better so that you minimize the impact on your kids is just incredibly brave and awesome. Not only that...but as they grow up and struggle with their own things, you will have modeled for them a healthy way to grapple with it, how to ask for help, how to take care of yourself, etc. You're a strong and wonderful person, and a wonderful mother.

I went on Celexa when I was 16 and came off when I met Glenn. I still struggle with it a little but the meds were messing with my metabolism a LOT but I learned to cope with Glenn around.

I am so glad you are getting help!
