I
posted recently over on sister community bookshare about how I was able to get my e-book downloaded a little more than 114,000 times since I published it earlier this year.
I really think Kindle, Nook, etc will put the majority of book publishers -- as we know them today, anyway -- out of business within the next 3-5 years. Think what happened to Blockbuster after Netflix took off.
If you're an author with a built-in demand, why would you give the publisher 90% or more of the profits, when Kindle's proposition is 70% you, 30% them? More importantly (because most of us are not motivated solely by money!), why wait 12-24 months for your book to hit shelves, when you can have it reach your fans within 24 hours of Kindle approving it for publication? I don't get that.
Political books, science and other non-fiction texts can benefit big-time from a shorter path to market... same deal with the huge authors like Stephen King, Stephenie Meyer etc.
Would be curious to hear what other authors think.
