Saturday Book Discussion: 1001 Books Poll

Jan 12, 2013 15:33

You might be thinking, "Hey, inverarity is totally using the SBD to pimp his books1001 comm!" And you'd be right!

For those not familiar with it, Peter Boxall's list of 1001 Books You Must Read Before You Die is from the book of the same name. It does not purport to be a perfect list - plenty of people have criticized it for its selection criteria (very Eurocentric, favorite authors of the literary experts who compiled the list tend to have disproportionate weight, hence Charles Dickens taking up ten slots, genre fiction gets barely more than a few token nods, etc.), but it's still an interesting and fun list to look at and see how many you have read*.

Hence my creating the books1001 community, the goal of which is to produce reviews for all 1001 books by randomly assigning a book to a participant. Originally the goal was to go through the list in a year, but many people have become inactive and never finished reading or reviewing their books. Hence, tomorrow I am purging all inactives from the list and generating new assignments for those who are still active members. Which means it's a great time for you to sign up!

In the last two years, I have ended up reading a lot of books I never would have otherwise, and it's been an interesting and broadening experience. So come join us!

Even if you don't want to be given a book to review, you are still welcome to join the community and read past reviews.

* In fact, the Books 1001 list was revised in 2010 to address some of those criticisms, but books1001 is still using the 2006 list.

And now, the poll! Yes, it is 1001 books long. But at least I reordered it alphabetically by author for you. Which of these books have you read?

Check all the books you have read.
