The Unready Queen by William Ritter

Oddmire book 2. Spoilers ahead for book 1.

Tinn is studying goblin things with Kull. Cole is a little worried because their mother Annie took on a new job and he's alone with Tinn off studying. Both boys have met another girl, Evie, at school, and she has a journal full of the creatures of the woods. Meanwhile, Fable is resistant to learning magic from her mother and fascinated by the village where they do such marvelous things as wear shoes and buy things. Her mother wonders if she will ever be ready to be queen.

Into such childish adventures comes a man trying to drill near the forest, eager to exploit resources, and this stirs up trouble between the forest and the village with the children in the middle of it. It involves drawings, a pool, why no one likes kelpies, whether there are giants, Evie's father being injured, and more.
