Aa catchall

Jul 19, 2010 14:33

So I keep fighting the urge to share the latest cute thing Aa has done, or said, or whatever, since experience has shown that this is a lot more interesting to the parent sharing than to anyone being shared with. But the pressure is building up, and I've got to let it out. I'll do you the favor of lumping it all together and putting it ( behind a cut. )

Italians from Calabria move the final *vowel* sound forward (well, there aren't too many final consonants in Italiano): for example, ricotta becomes (Ah-ri-GAUT) and mozzarella becomes (Ah-moots-ah-DELL)

I knew when I wrote this that anyone willing to put in the work would probably be able to figure out what [REDACTED] is, but figured the e-p-c-s-i-c group you mention above (some of whom, yes, read this journal) would be lazier than that. And we did have a Perils Of Pre-Releasing The Name experience with Aa, where we offhandedly mentioned a name we were considering as a possibility to one grandparent and within a week that entire side of the clan was referring to the baby by that name, buying personalized t-shirts, etc. It turned out to be the name we stuck with, but we both agreed to keep this name under wraps.

heh - I will note that my guess was not reffed :D Also, sorry if my above response seemed overly pontificating, that obviously was nt my intention since I know you guys are sane adults and you can make your own decisions! I think I just like to dispense advice about things. (That's not exactly pontificating, right ;))

I liked the redacted name a lot -- still do, actually. But a truly enormous number of students with that name over the years have made me decide to abandon it. The girl's name Kat and I like best is one that only one student, a girl I really enjoyed teaching, has had, and one that is pretty rare these days, thank goodness. Here's hoping it stays that way.

Personally I think "Redacted" is a lovely name, but I'd drop the square brackets. Too Objective-C.

I recommend "Erin". Think of the comedic potential! (Though actually, "Hypatia Clytemnestra" is also lovely.)

Don't think you're the first to suggest Erin, because you're not.

The thing is, I really like the name "Erin". Also, I felt safe in suggesting it since it wasn't likely to be treading on any under-consideration toes.

Can I suggest something like "Katrina Eleanor", since when combined with your last name it letterbanks into a common 13-letter word? (Although I admit it may not be one you want to encourage in your offspring.) I feel like you should give a head-start on wordplay to children--just like Eric Berlin, whose daughter's full name banks to "Linear B". (OK, that wasn't intentional. But still, how cool is that!)

Well, I did briefly consider Oona to continue the double-initial trend, but I decided I'd rather have a daughter who didn't hate me.
