Now that's a "hassock" if I ever saw one! That's what my grandmother always called a foot rest, or Ottoman.... (that's from the Ottoman Empire, by the way...)

see, now i always called it an "ottoman" (from the ottoman empire, yes)...but when i call it this, my mother looks at me like i have two heads.

Perhaps she objects to the use of a Muslim term? What would she call it? I think "hassock" sounds much more bizarre than "ottoman"!

no, actually that didn't occur to me! wow...someone else spotted sexism before i did...weird. ever since my mother freaked out on me and told me i "think too much" years ago when i pointed out the insulting absurdity of the "betty crocker knows WHAT GUYS WANT" commercials for instant mashed potatoes, i've had a complex about overreacting--which i ignore, a lot.
