Books here, books there, books books everywhere!

I've been given a bit of a kickstart in digging this blog out of mothballs by Adam Lipkin, AKA yendi at LiveJournal. We had a brief exchange about reading several books at once, based on where we were at any given moment and what we were doing.

Here's mine:

I generally read two books at a time. One is for fun and the other related to writing. Here's what I'm reading now:

For Fun: OTHER by Gordon R. Dickson
For Writing: TECHNIQUES OF THE SELLING WRITER by Dwight V. Swain. And I'm loving reading it. I haven't read this book since the early 80's and last week I decided to stop jiving around and track down a copy. B&N had a copy delivered to me two days later.

Swain's book is most excellent. One of his students, Jack Bickham, also wrote a lot of good writing books with much material based on what he learned from Swain.

Right now, I am deliberately between books.* But ordinarily I have one for the "vanpool" (waiting for soccer practices to end, etc.), one by the bed, Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell (it gets its own category - I love it while I'm reading it, but when I put it down I'm never in a rush to pick it up again; still I intend to finish it - even though it's been a YEAR now since I started it), and an Austen book (related to my work in progress).

I'm always reading several books at once - I just go by what mood I'm in at the time. Since I do all my reading in bed, there's a giant teetering stack o' books on my nightstand. Hubby has a fit if there are books all over, so I keep 'em either on my shelves or by the bed.
