For the record, my copy of N.K. Jemisin's The Hundred Thousand Kingdoms came courtesy of a contest conducted by the writer Tricia Sullivan, whose novel, Maul, I read a few years back and which which has since stayed with me far more strongly than most. I too thought that this was a pretty generic fantasy book, but I was actually able to complete it, which I think says something for it. I liked the feminist approach as well as the mixed race protagonist.

I'm probably biased though...

For whatever it's worth coming from a white guy, I like the mixed-race protagonist and the feminist approach too. What I didn't like was what you identified as the "pretty generic fantasy" bits.
