These are extraordinary. I was just wondering if know anything about the illustrator - I'd love to see more of his(?) work. I hope you don't mind but I re-posted a few of these - jameshoodillustration.blogspot.com.

Thanks

James

As always, please, re-post anything from this journal)

It's him (you are right) - Alexander Danilov (born 1959, Chelyabinsk, Russia).
I am pretty sure that's really him: http://www.urc.ac.ru/danilov/

(not to mix with http://www.daniloff-art.it/ , I would guess so).

Together with his wife they opened art-studio DIVAN in Chelyabinsk in 2005 (this book was printed in Chelyabinsk as well, in 1987).
It says here that in 2000-2001 he lived in the USA.

More of this works can be found here. But not much...

I love this book too!

By the way, as for the text - it's a book within a book. This Tale of the Military Secret or "Tale of the military secret, boy Malchish Kibalchish and his firm word" is told to the children in a longer story of the same author called "Military Secret" (which has the same sad ending - a boy killed too, but this time not during the war). It was translated into EnglishDIVAN's e-mail: gallery@ ( ... )

this is the whole book you see. And let me share scans in bigger resolution for your blog (I saved them while scanning), maybe you would like to work with them to present somehow else (would do it tomorrow).
Thanks too!
