Not recognizing Madonna: on growing up alien

A couple of months ago, a friend played a Madonna song and asked me whether I recognized the singer. I did not. The voice sounded familiar, but I couldn't put a name to it. The only thing on your list I ever did was listening to the radio, but I was in junior high school before I worked out that we got more than two stations: "AM" - the local station out of Covington that played the "Swap Shop" program my dad liked, and "FM", which was easy listening.

I mean, I knew that other radio stations existed, I just assumed we didn't get them, the way our TV didn't get channel 2 (Baton Rouge) or channel 13 (Biloxi).
