What genre? If you want sci-fi, try Asimov's Foundation series or The Mote in God's Eye by Larry Niven & Jerry Pournelle. Or a collection Arthur C. Clarke short stories. If you want fantasy, I highly recommend my favourite series of all-time - note the import of that statement - The Incarnations of Immortality by Piers Anthony. The first book is On a Pale Horse and if you don't like it, I'll buy it from you and give it as a gift to someone. If you want humorous fantasy, with a tinge of self-parody, the Myth series by Robert Asprin is fabulous. If you want classics, Les Misérables is my favourite novel, but also Dante's Divine Comedy and The Count of Monte Cristo. If you haven't read Alice in Wonderland or Through the Looking Glass lately, do it! Seriously.
I have saved this for last, because it's most important. I'm not sure how you feel about comic books/graphic novels, but you might want to start with Watchmen. It's incredible and pretty accessible

i agree with justin on Watchmen (which you must read if anyone will let you borrow it) and foundation, even though asimov creates very few - actually NO- notable female characters, it's still good.
also, one thousand white women by jim fergus is good historical fiction. i read it over spring break last year.
