I have an Apple Store giftcard that I got back at Christmas. I'm thinking about spending it now. My idea was to buy speakers that would hook to both my laptop and to my iPod. This seemed like a good idea until I realized there are 5 bazillion speakers out there. Luckily, not quite that many at the Apple Store, where I would buy them. So, I got ( Read more... )

I'd say go for the more expensive one. A subwoofer makes all the difference.

If you have enough on your gift card, get the more expensive one, definitely. It's free moneys! Sort of... but yeah, cheap speakers can be annoying.

I don't really know what I'm talking about, but I wanted to pretend to be helpful anyway... lol. ^^

It really doesn't matter. The only big difference (other then the subwoofer) is the frequency response. This shouldn't make a huge difference, because I've never seen an equalizer that would let you cut out anything lower then 60hz (and because it's such a small difference), but it *IS* higher quality, and some people can hear that little bit extra. However, as far as stuff like noise, they both exceed what is called the "perfect" signal/noise ratio which is 60, so either one is good on that. Everything else is pretty much the same, except the subwoofer, and I agree with Jessica that a subwoofer does make a lot of difference.

So I guess I'm pro-expensive, but I'd probably buy cheap because that's the way I am.

Ah, one last thing. If I understand everything right, then this could make a little bit of difference as well. See the things in the specification box for the expensive speakers that talk about power ratings? All measurements for stuff like signal to noise ratio was done at 10% of the power (10% volume). Anything above that means more interference which means worse quality. The expensive ones operate at 8 watts for 10% power (decent volume) and the other ones only operate at 6 (not as loud). So, overall, the more expensive ones are just better for the sound.
