On hosting a gathering

I wanted to put down my thoughts about the other night while they're still relatively fresh, so now that I have actually given up on getting ANY of the gazillion Things To Do on my list, here are some of them. Having (certain) people over is great, and I don't do enough of it, which is why this time I erred on the side of having Way Too Many ( Read more... )

Yow, I'm not even sure I *know* 40+ people to invite to a party... When there are more than 20 or so, I start to get antsy.

I suspect that the same people who refuse to supervise their kids at parties will be annoyed if they've been asked to not bring their kids to a party, and then someone else's kids are there. If there really is a space where the kids can be apart, maybe hiring a babysitter/kid wrangler would work? You could start with a full samily sort of thing and then send the kids off with the sitter to watch movies and do crafts or something. It would have to be impressed on the kids that moms and dads wanted to have grownup time, and were there if it was really an emergency, but etc.

Wow, 40+ people! And thanks again for the wake up call. I think you put on a really impressive party. I like the "everyone light a candle" thing, but I'm afraid I didn't figure it out. I was a little shellshocked by all the people.

'Really impressive', eh? Thanks! And yeah, shellshocked is a good description - I (and a few observant others) noticed you keeping mostly to yourself and to taking pictures :) In any case I hope it wasn't a very painful sort of shellshocked, if that makes any sense - and I hope you didn't feel like you *had* to stay as long as you did, and that you did only because you were enjoying yourself somewhat at least (and not just to put off the packing some more ( ... )

Yikes, leave it to me to write such a convoluted, stream-of-thought message. Good luck deciphering my attempts at coherent communication, particularly when tired!

The two hours I stayed there was my upper limit, not my minimum. I would have liked to have stayed later, but clearly didn't have the time.

And I was mingling more than at the company party! Took more pictures, too! I'll see if I can get some of those posted.
