Welcome to 2005

I'm not quite at the leading edge of gaming technology, but thanks to a Best Buy gift card, I've gotten a bit closer, with a Nintendo DS Lite, in Black Cherry flavour. Mmm, tasty.

So how does this Friend Code thing work? Is it per-game or per-DS? Mario Kart DS tells me I'm 4434-6559-1213-1000 541346-037456. I prefer Boolean, it's a bit easier ( Read more... )

True, I guess that is pretty handy. Still, I hate to think that Nintendo could decide I look like a pirate or something, and erase the game. Hang on, my tinfoil hat's slipping...

Heh.

Yay! Nintendo DS!

I have one. It's making itself very useful as a paperweight. And as a dust-collector.

Heh, not finding it very useful, I take it? (: I probably wouldn't have bought one, except the aforementioned gift card completely covered the cost, so I figured I might as well treat myself. We'll see how much use I get from it.

Probably less than I would if our bus drivers weren't on strike. d:

The game's settings are saved to the game card. But really, that's to be expected. The wifi settings, though, those are saved to the DS itself. They'll remain persistent for any game that uses WFC.

The friend code system is per-game. AND per-DS. Both at once. Apparently, the way it comes up with the friend code is a hashing algorithm using both the game's and the DS's internal serial numbers. There IS a way to trade the serial numbers of two DSes (in case you get the DSi, whenever they decide to release it in North America) to save your friend codes, but in general, don't use another DS with that copy of the game.

Yes, this is rather a bit silly at first, but the reasoning behind it is that it allows you to sell either the game or the DS without worrying about someone impersonating you online.

Now, also note this very carefully: You will get no notification that I have added you to my friend roster until you do the same, and vice versa. This gets supremely annoying in many cases, most notably if the friend code servers aren ( ... )

Thanks for the tips! Much appreciated. You're right, it does seem rather silly. I guess it makes some sort of sense, though. Like their decision to not make PictoChat internet-aware, to prevent people from sending pictures of penises to children or something.
