Phantom Planet is only missing one ingredient: Jason Schwartzman. Since he left the group to pursue full-time acting circa 2004, their albums have been devoid of the pure joy that permeated The Guest. It's been a sad de-evolution to witness because you know they're better than the material they're currently releasing.

The antidote? Rooney. Featuring Jason's brother Robert (of Princess Diaries fame), the band took 5 years off between albums and came through with songs that showed their growth as artists, but didn't betray their pop-friendly Guest-esque roots. While they originally felt like a Phantom knock-off, they are now the real California deal.
