Preliminary ruling on the new Offspring album:

Now bear in mind I've only listened to it once thus far, but as it's been almost five years in the making, I'm quite excited to get this out there.

So, based on listening to it once: It's no Smash, and it's no Americana, but it's also no Splinter or Conspiracy of One. Thank God for that!

Totally forgot about it. And of course it's no Smash, because that's one of the best albums of the '90s and the punk genre, and Offspring has tailed off considerably since. I didn't even like Americana all that much.

I realize that I'm probably the sole person in the universe who feels this way, but I actually like Americana better than Smash. This may or may not be because it reminds me of good times in my life (junior high FTW), and I actually didn't discover Smash until later. Of course it's one of the best albums of the 90s, but I don't know about the punk genre. I realize that I'm also alone in this, but for some reason I've never thought of the Offspring as punk. I don't know why this is, but when I categorize them, "punk" isn't one of the first words to pop into my head. Weird, I know.

Yeah, you're definitely the only person I know who doesn't consider Smash their best, or them a punk band. What exactly do you consider their genre to be?

Just rock, I guess? Gritty, refreshingly-not-overproduced rock. I guess I consider punk to be more Pennywise, NOFX, Dead Kennedys...that sort of thing. I'm not saying that I would argue vehemently that Offspring aren't a punk band at all, because they do sound punk musically...it's just sort of the way I categorize things in my head, which is full of weird musical categorizations. Another one of my friends recently thought it was odd that I don't consider Coheed "heavy metal," so I guess I just categorize strangely.
