My older cousin Robert posted a blog on MYSPACE about affirmative action. I'm putting his blog under the cut and then I'll post my reply I wanted to get peoples opinions...so comment and let me know what you think!!
Rob's Blog:
With the nomination of Barack Obama, our nation as a whole is once again revisiting the issue of "RACE"...
In recent months i've been having very open, very candid conversations about this with several friends/ aquiantances, and one topic that frequently comes up is Affirmative Action.
The Affirmative Action program was about opening up, about ensuring that all people, regardless of race or gender, have equal opportunities during the hiring process, reviews for promotion, admission to college, ect..
Many people feel that affirmative action is no longer necessary. Some feel that white people, specifically white men, are now being discriminated against.
I feel our nation has made great strides in promoting equality, but i dont feel that we've reached the point where Affirmative Action is no longer necessary. A.A. has opened up many doors for women and ethnic minorities that would've otherwise been slammed shut and sealed.
I feel this program has made America more racially aware, and as a result, more equal...
Feel free to leave your opinion on this touchy subject, whether you are for the program or against it...

My Response:
Affirmative Action...what to say..well you text me and you wanted my opinion. Ok, I do believe that A.A. is still needed. why, I'll explain...I work at Wal-Mart...ok they pride themselves on being very...ethnic. In my store there is ONE african american person as Dept. Manager, Two Hispanic Dept. Managers, One filipino/white mix, and the rest of them are white. Our management team for our store consists primarily of whtie males with two white females, and three hispanic females. Now...I've met a lot of people in our corporation...and I've yet to stumble across one Black store/co/assist. manager.
While I do believe that affirmative action is needed...whose to say that some corporations take it entirely too far...if you have three applicants for the same job, they have similar degrees at various prestigious universities, Have the same job history, exemplarary job performance, they are all bilingual and fluent in spanish, and the only thing that differs is the race...you have one full white, one mixed, and one black who is getting the job. the mixed person...its a consensus..you hope they dislike the black roots enough to actwhite...
So with that being said I THINK WE NEED TO KEEP AFFIRMATIVE ACTION...because unfortunately racisim still exsists in our nation..and while most of it is covert racisim because being outright racist is frowned, its still here.... I see it everyday...
