Trapped miners....

Jan 04, 2006 11:36

Maybe I'm just a horrible prick of a person (maybe?) but why is a bunch of miners trapped in a mine such a big deal? I'm sure it's a big deal where it's happeneing, like local news. But why is it making national news?

NEWSFLASH! MINING IS A DANGEROUS OCCUPATION! DURRR.

Hey, i heard there's a boy trapped in a well somewhere! Call CNN!

I think the news likes to show pictures of horror-stricken faces, people befallen by tragedy. I can't remember the last time I used coal so, as far as I'm concerned, these are rather senseless deaths. I guess it's a big national deal because all those families got severely moded by authorities.

Like, there was a terrible explosion, but twelve men have been recovered alive ... PSYCHE! We meant one, one man was actually saved, the rest are retrievable but dead. I like how some of the news articles implied that the survivor's youth is what saved him.
