I've been having a hard time getting the nitrites in my fish tank to go down.  It seems like no matter what measures I take, the nitrite levels won't ease up ( Read more... )

I had guppies when I was a a kid. Yeah, they reproduce like rabbits.

Hope you have a good day on what is now 'today', and your kids are as happy to see you as you will be to see them.

Guppies are very prolific...however, the fry are often eaten by the adults so a lot of natural selection occurs. If you want babies to mature, make sure there is a lot of places they can hide from the big ones like in dense plants and such. I kept guppies for many years and love them, especially some of the fancier kind.

One dead guppy won't raise nitrite levels much...is there a lot of plant decomposition?Or maybe too much decomposing food?

How big is your tank? Is it aerated and filtered?

Sorry about the third degree...I'm sure you know what you're doing.

No, I don't, actually. I took the fish on because they came to school as part of a study on living things. No one wanted the last one. Of course, I would get the pregnant one!

It has a bubbler, and a natural filter. I think it needs a good cleaning again (although that didn't help last time). I might even try some distilled water this time, too, to see if that makes a difference. And get a feeder fish.

I hate to see them die. Knowing they suffer with the toxicity bothers me. I don't like to see any animal suffer.
