Title: In Memory
Fandom: Justice League
Characters: Booster/Beetle (implied), Wonder Woman, various
Prompt: "Friends."
Word Count: 497
Rating: PG
Author's Notes: Continuity played fast and loose, and also assumes Max Lord is dead (I'm sure at some point in his continuity he was at least presumed so). When this takes place, I can't be certain, and it may just be AU for the purpose of everything fitting. Don't ask me who the funeral was for, I left that open on purpose. I don't even know where this came from, I just pictured Wonder Woman and it grew from there.
With all that out of the way, a toast! To those lost. (I have horribly depressed myself now.)

In Memory

No one was quite sure how it happened, some sort of subconscious groupthink or maybe it was just the most obvious location, but they all ended up at Warriors after the funeral. As people drifted in, chairs and tables were pushed together until they had a giant post-funeral luncheon.

Conversation was subdued, for the most part, and during a lull Diana calmly stood and raised her glass. When all eyes turned to her, she said evenly, "To the Justice League."

Other glasses lifted and other group names were called out.

"Justice League International."

"Justice League Europe."

"The Global Guardians."

"The Outsiders."

"God help 'em, to Justice League Antarctica, where ever those poor bastards are now."

"Super Buddies!" Booster and Beetle chorused, then laughed helplessly, leaning against each other to stay upright.

A few chuckles followed their outburst. Then Ralph Dibny solemnly lifted his bottle of Gingold and said, "To Barry Allen."

"To Vibe," J'onn murmured.

Across the table, Vixen caught his eye and with a sad smile added, "To Steel." J'onn dipped his head in acknowledgment.

"Maxima," Beetle spoke up reverently, raising his glass.

"Amazing Man," Booster replied, tapping his glass against Beetle's.

"Ice," Guy and Beatriz said at the same time. Surprised, they glanced at each other, then an understanding look passed between them and they again spoke in unison, "Tora."

"Crimson Fox," Power Girl said. "Both of them."

"Silver Sorceress."

"General Glory!"

"Tomorrow Woman."

More names were called out, glasses lifted high as the dead were honored with the imbibing of various beverages.

"Maxwell Lord," Beetle suddenly blurted. "He was ruthless, conniving, and borderline evil sometimes...but he cared. He gave a damn about us and believed in us when no one else did. ...Even ourselves."

Respectful silence greeted his statement as everyone's thoughts focused on those who couldn't be with them that day.

"May the great beyond take them and scatter their souls 'cross the universe, renew and rejoice."

To everyone's shock, the words had come from Booster Gold, who solemnly bowed his head. Beetle turned and bumped his shoulder against the man's, and Booster glanced up at him and smiled. They spoke quietly and Diana only caught a few words, "If you die before me..." "I'd be honored if you'd be my eulogist, Ted..." But there was a faint blush to Beetle's cheeks that suggested there was more to the conversation than was being said, and she was almost certain they were holding hand under the table.

Diana wondered, idly, if they would come together like this again. Then she glanced over the group to take in the faces of those around her, some smiling sadly, some near tears, most sharing stories of lost friends, and amended the thought to when. She wondered if her name would be among those toasted then.

Turning to listen as Flash began a story about Donna Troy and a cooking misadventure, Diana took comfort in the thought that she might one day be remembered in such a way.
