Am I depressed?

Jan 09, 2012 02:27

I hope you don't mind if I ask this since I know that a few people on my flist know about depression from earlier posts and discussions, and I'm not sure if I'm able to self-diagnose since all I know about it is what I've read online. There have been times in my life when I felt really down emotionally and had to make a real effort to lift myself ( Read more... )

lack of energy, anemia, asking for advice, depression

I don't know about the specifics, but I'm so sorry you're feeling down, as well as dealing with awkwardness from multiple friends. Yuck. I, too, hate doctors, so I can sympathize there, but I will say that some doctors and therapists are awesome, and can do a much better job helping than friends. I hope you find something that works soon, and that, in the meantime, you get some catharsis from writing here :).

Sounds like a tough time. I'm sorry you're going through a rough spot.

I really, really hate doctors too, but I'm resigned to having to see them for some things. They tend to be the best qualified to figure out what's going on. That said, I've often found that if a person is to the point of wondering if they're depressed, there's usually something going on that needs attention. A doctor would be best for sussing it out, though.

I hope you can work something out! Take care of yourself. :)

Thank you. I haven't seen a doctor yet and I'm still hoping I won't have to - I don't have much faith in GPs from my previous experience, but I've talked to someone I know (a self-defense training teacher) who has a degree in medicine, and she's given me some advice on improving my physical condition, immunity and energy levels. We'll see how it works out.

I'm not sure that I can give any advice, since I never really been through that kind of things by myself, but some people very close to me did (my mother almost killed herself because of depression years ago), and I think it may help you to talk about it and the reasons which make you feel that way (or -if you don't see a viable reason- trying to find the origin). Or you simply need rest for some period, without any pressure or obligation, and you can try to do different stuff than usual, for a change of pace. These can be a very good cure too :)

Anyway, just wanted to let you know that you have all my sympathy *hugs* I hope you'll feel better soon.

It does sound like you might have minor depression. Though, obviously, I'm not really qualified to say for sure. :\ Talking to a therapist/[any person who has the tools to help you] might be useful, and might help you figure out why you're feeling this way, or if there's a bigger medical issue.

Anyway, sorry you're in a bad mental place. It seems to be like a disease that's going around right now.

Thank you. Maybe it's because of the holidays. People stay inside, eat a lot, and feel pressure to be happy.

I'm really sorry to hear about this and I really hope you feel better. There are lots of different types of depression and our bodies are really often just weird machines. Sometimes just changing our diets can affect mood. However I can't really say if you are depressed or not. You might have minor depression or you could be getting sick.

Has this been going on for more than a week? If the physical pain gets worse I would suggest a doctor, even though I know you don't like them. If it is minor depression? Therapy might help. Everyone deals with depression differently. I don't want to give any wrong advice, though I think just talking it out, even just writing it out, might help (like you did).

I wish you the best and hope your spirit lifts soon. :)

Thank you. The physical pain is getting better, but the listlessness and lack of energy is still there. It's about two weeks now.

I'm happy that you are at least feeling slightly physically better. But since you are continuing with listlessness and lack of energy maybe a doctor visit would be prudent?

Just a quick question(s) though! Do you exercise/eat right? Sometimes physical activity and a change of diet can affect mood. However if you do both already I would really suggest a doctor then.
