Buffy movie revisited + the canon version of Buffy’s origins (part 2)

In part 1, I've reviewed the Buffy 1992 movie and listed its differences from Joss Whedon's original script.

Now we’re going to take a look at the differences between the script/the movie on one hand, and the show on the other. While the huge difference in tone is all due to the execution and script changes, there are a few things that don’t match ( Read more... )

Thanks for this read. I never read The Origins comic and this makes me want to read it. While the movie was a bad romp, I'm glad it got made simply to help Joss get his start and try his hand again at Buffy on the TV screen.

I've got a permanent account, which means over a hundred icon spaces. Not sure I'd pay for one these days, but I got it back when LJ was, you know, popular...

I get the impression Joss just wanted to put the film behind him and move on back in 1996-7, not refer back to it. Plus the writers assume - correctly. in my opinion - that most 'Buffy' fans don't know what happened in the movie, and it would only confuse things to refer back to it.

We just have to pretend that it makes sense that such a powerful influential vampire as Lothos was never mentioned again. Given what we see of the Council on the show, it wouldn't surprise me if they never even knew there was a single vampire orchestrating all the attacks on Slayers ( ... )

(More in the script than in the movie) Buffy’s family also seems richer, more in Cordelia’s league (at least this is my impression - for instance, at one point she mentions a trust fund from her grandfather that she spent on shoes) than on the show, where they’re firmly middle-class types. One of the frustrating things about the show, for me, was the way it failed to deal with finances and class issues, with rare exceptions (Faith in S3, Xander in S4); but that's pretty typical of American tv and movies, where everybody seems to have a bigger house/apartment than their actual careers would indicate possible. And being the daughter of a divorced mom, I wondered pretty much from episode 1 how Joyce was able to afford such a nice house on the salary of an art gallery - manager? Owner? I was never sure about that either. We never see her cleaning house, paying bills, etc. (The same with Giles - what the heck was he living on all that time between Graduation, and Checkpoint? Didn't Joss decide at some point he lived on family money? ( ... )
