Buffy season 1 revisited

So, I’ve finished my re-rewatch (!) of season 1. I expected it to go faster, but there were a lot of distractions - from unexpected work, to the fact that, well, it was hot summer weather and most days were being spent on a beach, and a lot of nights out in the city. I don’t think I’ve noticed before that Joyce even more explicitly, and unwittingly, inspires Buffy to fight the destiny when she says: “Is it written somewhere that you can’t go (to the school dance)?”

That's an excellent point (and ties in beautifully with beer_good_foamy's recent meta on Buffy as postmodern hero. And I'm slapping myself for not having noticed. If I do S1 Joyce meta like I keep hoping may I quote you? I think motherhood as a theme is an undercurrent that is rarely explored or discussed on the show or by fans, at least until S5 when it becomes a front-and-center focus, then in following seasons Buffy has to play surrogate mother ( ... )

Angel - moment of "happiness", soul goes kablooey (when did it go from "moment of happiness" to "can't have sex" btw?)
Spike - moment of effulgent, spiritual union, soul intact. Point for Spike.
