Fandoms can be very frustrating, as we all know. Unless you find a very special safe haven where intelligent discussions can be had, you're going to get depressed and angry all the time. Art may be subjective and open to interpretation, but as you venture into online discussions of popular TV shows, books and movies, chances are that you're going ( Read more... )

Where did it all start? With Adam and Eve? Helen of Troy?

There was actually an ancient Greek rhetorician called Gorgias who demonstrated his rhetoric skills by writing a defense of Helen of Troy. Because Helen of Troy was so vilified that convincing people she was innocent was a great accomplishment.

YES to every word of this. I'm not familiar with the other fandoms you mention but that doesn't matter; the pattern is everywhere. (And perhaps part of the reason m/m slash is so popular with female writers? No literal stand-in for themselves, they can, in essence, enjoy writing and "watching" the tale without blaming ( ... )
