Being somebody who has a first name regularly spelt and/or/both/ pronounced incorrectly (McLennan attracts a simular level of ignorance), I persistently try to ensure I get peoples names correct. I also find it to be a more civilised form of addressing somebody to use their name. But I must agree with you, that some of these names are becoming, well, stupid. People change the names for the sake of being unique - but I can tell you first hand, it doesn't have massive fringe benefits. Unfortunately, seeing something written on paper and pronouncing it can cause some big problems, and though I cannot say any, if not all, parents who name their children are responsible, but it can also undermine the confidence of their child by their peers.
