Case in point: Friend of mine who I consider extremely worth my time is terribly allergic to one of my pets. I figure her calling me up and saying, in effect, "I really want to hang out, so I'm loading up on antihistamines, praying, and heading over to hang out," is really good evidence that she's a solid person to count as a friend. (Then I try to make sure that we spend a lot of time in the garden, or in a pet-free hangout, or else just do what I can to minimize the dander before she comes over, because it's a two-way street.)
Phobias are a little different, although I think with things like snakes and spiders in particular people tend to confuse "kinda squicked out due primarily to ignorance" with "pathological and uncontrollable fear."

Though, I agree, barring an actual phobia, anyone being kept from visiting you because your pet is "creepy" probably isn't worth being visited by.
