I'd say a good analogy to how I feel about life is to compare myself to a kid who has been held back in school. For a couple of years now I have watched all my friends learn, grow, and move onward in life while I have not. I think that wasn't meant to be literal, and I don't take it entirely literally, but. . .I do think you are 'killing yourself' over some of these things.
Not that you're putting yourself in danger. But, focusing on some things while entirely forgetting others is a form of death in itself I suppose.

Those life lessons as you call them have to be learned by the reckless abandonment of actually doing things, sometimes repeatedly. Thats why so many people date over and over before they find the person they want to spend their lives with. I think very little can be learned by reflection of the situation from a third party perspective. You got to get into the thick of it, and a lot of times, screw up, look stupid, and feel bad. Repeatedly.
Just my two cents though.
