My Own Social Theory

Sep 30, 2005 00:32

In the past couple of weeks I've come to believe that there is a strong correlation between those who do not conform to social norms and those who have psychological disturbances: the greater the nonconformer, the greater the psycological disturbance. Now I'm not quite sure which comes first: the non-conforming or the disturbance, but I do know ( Read more... )

These are pretty vague statements because I don't want to be the person to cast the first stone against the so-called "freaks." You are definitely right that all of us are nonconformers to some degree and to a certain extent that is normal and good. I'm criticizing those who decide to publicly go against the tide. Privately it is all well and good, but when nonconformers go public and go radical they not only hurt themselves, but the people who follow them. As for psychological disturbance, I'm refering to the emotional damage as a result of not fitting in as well as the danger of losing grips with reality. A lot of people who decide to go completely radical seem to lose touch with any sense of reality other than their own warped one ( ... )

Don't forget however, without the crass, public non-conformers there would never be revolutions. It might be a little bit of an extreme example but just take a look at the american revolution.

It might sound like you need to find a new job. The position you put yourself in right now as an RA is an easy way to help people who can right away stab you in the back. Hell, I'm sorry I was one of those people who took advantage of you. But another thing to keep in mind it's not personal. It just the position of power that you hold that people will abuse. Most of us don't have a personal vendetta against you.

Take care Bryan. I'll be around soon to raise more hell.

LOL, oh I don't worry too much about my "positions of power." I know you guys are young. Just the personal side of life that gets complicated. Thanks for your thoughts and always interesting to hear read what's going on in your life and mind.

Have you read the unabomber manifesto? It's pretty good, and deals strongly with social norms like you are referring.
It was definitely worth reading, even though I only agree with 1/3 of it.
Go Blue (haha)

Only a very few people will ever remotely understand you. It's sad, but it's how life goes. After a lifetime of always feeling alone in the crowd and trying to make people question and understand, it does get pretty annoying when nothing is accomplished. Most people are just not ready for such truth. It scares them so they hide in their shallow attempts at normality. It doesn't exist, it's just what everyone strives for. They are the sad ones...not you, or the few others who truly examine and question the reality of life.

Have fun underground, but dont get to comfy.
