Well, I rather suppose that, in retrospect, I shouldn't have even asked.

I mean, it's not as though I'm surprised, really...

...You all know that this is the best way to make sure you never get rid of me, right?

It's not really as though I care, you know. I don't need any of this.

Well, scene shift, page turn, move on, whatever.

Next?

What happened? I was just about to take a nap, do you need me to come down there?

Hm. Apparently, the 'best course of action' here has led to me being informed that...how did they put it...'I am not welcome back following the Christmas break.'

You've got to be joking.

No.

Sweet Jesus, my father was there, do you know that?

They got my father up here.

And, perhaps, afterwards. Who knows what paths we will walk down, correct?

Though we have never been on the best of terms, Terry. I will miss you. And I'm sorry it came to this. I know you don't care much but I'm sorry.

And I will miss being so frustrated with you constantly.

Goodbye, Susan. I do hope you have learned something from all this, as well.

Then I have behind me even more wasted effort than I believed.

I mean, I realise that trying to teach you to deal with Goldberg was all a waste, when it was all done, but if there's nothing at all that's stuck to the wall in that head of yours, I might have to write you off as a completely lost cause.

And that would be rather depressing, I think.

How terrible. Objectively speaking, of course. You said somewhere up there you spent too much time in school and I believe you.

This doesn't mean I won't owl you my address because I would like to hear from you, dare I say, see you every once in a while. Don't be a stranger.

I really don't believe that school and I are something that was meant to be. This isn't how I'd choose to end that relationship, but what are you going to do, right?

And most definitely, of course. To not being a stranger, I mean. I'm rather certain that Marietta is somewhere on the list of people who would not mind seeing me fall down a long flight of stairs, however, so...there's no nice way to say 'If she's around, warn me', is there.

Exactly, darling. You bite the inside of your lip in that way that makes you look debonair instead of pouty, put that chin up (but not too up because people will see up your nostrils and that's not very attractive, is it?), and march on to face the world. The one where people have to work, meet rent, eat decent food once in a while, et cetera.

Once Marietta sees that you're very much like us, I don't think she'll want to inflict any physical or emotional pain on you. Not very often, anyway.

Chin up, marching proudly to face the world. Check. Not too far up, however, because I'm also prone to falling flat on my face.

And I suppose I shall have to take your word for that, then, and hope, as always, for only the best.

If only I wasn't such a natural cynic.
