I guess my age will show when I look at shows about the solar system and such and I wonder why Pluto is no longer being considered a planet
( Read more... )
Pluto was discovered in 1930, through pure chance of being where they were looking for a big planet disturbing the orbits of Uranus and Neptune (found because it was disturbing Uranus and astronomers calculated where to look as well). Later refinements of orbital physics fixed the "oh something big must be changing the ice giants' orbits" problem.
Also, it's not being called a moon, it's being called a dwarf planet. I admit I'm still rather put off by the lack of Pluto in the lineup too, but it does make sense to reclassify it.
I dunno about other people, but listing the dwarf planets would be somehow more grating to me than dropping Pluto from commentary. It'd go Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Ceres, Jupiter, Uranus, Neptune, Pluto... um... *wikis* Haumea, Makemake, Eris.
To me, Pluto will always be included. I know, it's proven that it shouldn't be and all that, but for me, I simple don't care. Pluto is in and I'm just a stuborn old cow. lol

Here's a clip of Neil deGrasse Tyson explaining some of the controversy surrounding the "demotion" of Pluto.
