New York

Alright guys, I have been kicking around this idea of going to New York City for a long time now. Some of you may remember me wanting to go back at the beginning of the year, to see Sweeney Todd on Broadway. It never happened for several stupid reasons and faults of my own. This time, I do not want this to happen ( Read more... )

You'll be hard-pressed to find anything in New York under $150 a night. You might wanna research bed & breakfasts.

I'd say you could stay with me but I don't know what my situation in February is going to be yet.

Sounds like you should be okay with money for at least a week, though, if you can somehow get around the high hotel rates.

I hadn't heard about the Byrne thing! I might be interested in that, depending on the cost. The Arcade Fire show-- are there still tickets for that? I'd go to that too, although I'm not terrrrrrribly crazy about AF (just sayin').

Blah blah blah anyway yeah do it, dude.

The Arcade Fire tickets go on sale January 5th. See the info HERE for details.

The Carnegie Hall event is called Welcome to Dreamland. It would appear to be associated with Nonesuch, Byrne's current label. Those ticket prices are cheaper than when I saw Wynton Marsalis here in Cleveland a couple Aprils back.

If I can stay with you as opposed to paying for a place to sleep, that'd be fantastic, as like you said, I'd be OK in the money department if I can dodge the hotel rates. Plus, I'd like to meet you in person anyway.

Like I said, I'll have to get back to you on the staying with me thing, but it's entirely possible. Just have to find a place. :p

Yeah, it would definitely be cool to meet.

New York is more expensive than Ohio in general. NYC, particularly, since it draws in tourists ( ... )

"Check the age policies for hotels if you aren't 21 yet."

I'm at least a few months older than you and Kevin, remember? I've been fully legal since November. ;P

The Folk concert falls on a Friday, while the Arcade Fire tickets fall in the middle (Monday through Friday), so it will appear that the folk concert will be more expensive, hotel-rate-wise.

I don't mind having to do walks. I've walked all over Chicago and Washington DC, and I wouldn't mind walking all over NYC from the look of it, save I don't do anything stupid.

Last time I did any bus research, most of those little stops at tiny towns have been gotten rid of to reduce costs.

I will definitely shoot Expedia and Orbitz for something more affordable. As much as I want to do this, I do not want to go completely broke over it.

Credit: I guess you're right on that. Doh!

Shit, that's right. I'm rusty at remembering everyone's birthdays now that we're not all in the same home room. :(

I hope you have a good trip. Ironically, the farthest I've ever been travelling alone is to Dover, Ohio. I'd try and find someone to stay with or expedia the flight and hotel. If you can get someone to go with you, it would totally cut down on cost (because it would be only half price per night for the hotel giving you both much more flexibility on what to spend your money on like food and concert tickets).

I wouldn't drive or take a bus; both would take more time and be a great pain in the ass (literally). Buses are hell, to me.

You could probably find a decently-priced flight if you booked within the next week. As the person above said, make sure you look into how far the hotel is from the airport and make sure you can either walk or work out transportation (cab, bus, or any other airport transit).

I would also agree with acatkiller on her point of looking on expedia for flight/hotel; I just did a basic search on hotels in NYC (Manhatten, specifically) and found rooms starting from around $99/night at the cheapest and going up to $300+/night. I use expedia everytime I travel and have never had problems with them, at all.
