How fun! I've done a little bit of container planting, and I think the biggest thing is just trial and error, unfortunately, since that takes so long! Something I didn't do the first year I planted and have learned to since is watch the light in your yard during the day and afternoon to see which spots get full sun, some sun, and mostly shade. Most plants in a nursery will be marked for the kind of sun they thrive in. I had my best luck yet with tomatoes last year - they had Rutgers seedlings where I went, and my dad used to plant that variety. They're not huge, but they have fantastic flavor! Suppose that's my other, well, not tip, but thing I would do if I had a yard, is watch for heirloom varietials to grow... I would love to compost one day too, but that may be more of a pain than it's worth!

Best of luck to you!!! I stink at gardening, although we did have a compost pile at my parents' that was pretty easy to maintain. Just don't toss partial potatoes in - unless you want them to grow there. o.O
