How do you kill 'em?

I have tons in my yard, and I need to figure out how to get rid of them in a way that will still allow our yard and lawn to be child-safe.

Someone suggested cornmeal to me...what..I just buy a thing of cornmeal one would use to make corn bread and start tossing it on the ground?

So confused.
