I heard from a friend of mine that Elton John is playing in Toronto today. Why should that be news? Oh, just that Elton John is touring above the 54-40 and he refuses to tour the U.U. Why? Because the U.S. won't support Gay Marriage.
I am baffled by the fact that Americans won't back gay marriage. I just, plain don't understand it. All foreign people are told that America is the land of the free, home of the brave. But not only will half of Americans not allow a minority of people to marry people with the same body parts, they want to pass a Constitutional Amendment that specifically denies said minority from marrying people with the same body parts.
I just have to ask why?
Why is gay marriage a threat to heterosexuals? European nations are slowly passing gay marriage and civil union laws with little fanfare and less violence. Canada allows gay marriage with nary a whisper from the opposition. Why can't the U.S., which is teeming with emotion on just about every issue but especially on "rights" realize that gay marriage is not a threat to heterosexual marriage in any way?
On the issue of soulmates, is it fair to deny a person the right to marry if their soulmate is of the same gender? Of course not.
It's hard enough to find a soulmate. I don't think everybody has a soulmate. I think some people, including me are destined to walk the earth without one, because we're supposed to accomplish our tasks without one.
But because there is so much homophobia in this country, I think a lot of closeted gays marry a heterosexual and live in misery. Not only are they married to the wrong person, they're married to the wrong gender. It just isn't supposed to be and how many people go down that path because they can't be true to themselves. And think about it. Is it fair to the spouse? A fake marriage to the wrong person of the wrong gender is preventing the spouse from finding true love as well.
It's a big fat waste of time. But the Religious Right goes around trying to "convert" gays. And for what purpose? So that those narrow minded idiots can feel more comfortable with their own ideology not thinking for a moment the damage they cause when they try to force people through guilt and shame to live as they think they should live.
Again, why is gay marriage so threatening to conservative Americans that they have to go out and force people to think as they do? And drop the Bible verses. That's a cop-out.
Without quoting one Biblical verse, why is gay marriage so wrong and why should any heterosexual think it threatens in any way heterosexual marriage?

And why is forcing a queer to marry a heterosexual a good thing?
While I don't think that every gay man should politicize his marriage, I think Elton John has the right idea.
