on male and female characters, rambling about how they’re written and received, YMMV

So, by now everyone’s prob aware that in the upcoming remake of Sherlock, the role of John Watson has been changed to Joan Watson with the casting of Lucy Liu. I KNOW, OLD NEWS, SHH I have…mixed feelings. I’m not happy with it, but I also don’t agree with the reasons most people are using in their arguments.

[let me try out this new spoiler cut-click here for rambling!] There’s been a whole ton of outrage atRead more... )

One of my very favorite female characters is Mary Shannon from In Plain Sight (the show is currently airing its final season on the USA Network). Also, Dani Reese from a short-lived NBC show called Life was pretty flawless (at least, she was during season 1, but then the network interfered with the show during season 2 and screwed everything up. So, if you watch that show, (which you should because to this day it is still mind-blowingly awesome), I'd suggest forgetting about the existence of season 2). She was picked right out of the police academy to be an undercover cop in a drug ring, and she fell in love with one of the drug dealers and became addicted to cocaine... and that's just her backstory that happened completely off-screen. So she is basically on the same life restoring journey as the main male character and she is just as complex as he is, which makes for one of the greatest partnerships of all time. One of my favorite Life fanvids ( ... )

Oh, Mary! I've seen a few eps of the show but didn't keep up with it because her family was terrible and really off-putting. :/ I know that shouldn't detract from a great lead, but it's just...the annoying mother and sister who took advantage of her really infuriated me. Did they get any better?!

I've seen Life, and I absolutely adored season 1. I wish I'd had you aorund to warn me about season 2, though, because that was pretty abysmal. >_< I only just heard about the network interference earlier in the week, I'd never realized that was what ruined the show! Idiots! I will never get over the Tidwell thing, NEVER

Thanks for the yt link! I love well-made fanvids. ^_^

Mary's family did get better, but not until around season 3. I do remember how unbearable they were in season 1, and I almost abandoned the show, too, but I was way too in love with the Mary/Marshall ship to give up on the show.

Aw, I had wondered if you'd seen Life! It seemed like your kind of show. I miss that show so darn much. Even though season 2 was crappy, I still wasn't ready for the show to end.

Hmm, really? It looks fine to me- at least this is what I see. And when I clicked on it, the text came up as normal. It's not like that for you?

Ah, I assumed that 'coz it looked all right when I clicked on my journal, it meant it was working. >_< I'm sorry! I'll go back to using lj-cut, then.

Jeez, lj, even when they develop something that might be useful, it still doesn't work. *eyeroll*

Aww! Excellent pimp! And I am sad this isn't an actual show and just an audio drama (I AM SORRY, I AM A VISUAL PERSON, OKAY) because she seems awesome.

But she wasn't REALLY in King Arthur's court, was she? I'm not sure what's real and what's hyperbole here! obv she didn't actually eat Daleks, lol THAT DRAGON, OMG, I WANT ONE.

I CAN'T CHANGE THE HABITS OF A LIFETIME, HEARING THINGS JUST DOESN'T WORK FOR ME. I AM THE TYPE OF GIRL WHO ENABLES SUBTITLES ON DVDS BECAUSE I PREFER READING THEM.

That makes me sad, though! I'm picturing DEATH from the Terry Pratchett universe (The Hogfather, etc. etc.) and he's so endearing. And now the thought of him being stabbed...noooo!

Then again, Teatime tried that and it didn't work, so I feel better

Now I'm picturing Death like from Final Destination and I am cheering on the stabbity stabbing. \o/
