The internet has changed a lot of things and made a number of professions obsolete, in particular, any profession with the term "agent" or "broker" in its title. Take travel agents, why would anyone want to use a travel agent and pay a fee for their services (well, not up front, the fee is attached to your ticket price) when you can use the online ( Read more... )

Hi Tim,

Joe used to occasionally browse craigslist back when he was looking for an apartment, and I think he actually visited an apartment he found there once. I'm sure they're real enough, you just have to be careful. I could ask Joe about it if you want. (And if you find something good for under $1000 a month, I'm sure he'll want to know where it is. ;)

Btw, I think it's cute how you ask for your friends list for advice. It's like something I would do. :)

I'm not sure what you mean by "I just have to be careful." What sorts of dangers do I need to be wary of? Bad apartments? Bad leases?

Also, did Joe end up using a broker? If I'm willing to live in Brooklyn, Queens (along one of the trains going into the city) or Manhattan, should I have the same problems? What about Hoboken?

Sorry, I know its a lot of questions, but this is a big deal.

Tim

I asked Joe, and he said he doesn't know anything about renting apartments. I guess he just kind of winged it when he moved to the city. Sorry. :( But he's generally good with practical matters like that, so if you ever have any more questions about living in the city, I can ask him.

Well, as much as I want to move there, Michelle is pushing me harder toward Memphis and Nashville, as I mentioned earlier. That would definitely be easier. We'll see. If I don't have a job in Memphis or N'ville by this summer, I'll go to NYC and let Michelle go to her dad's. I'm terribly frightened about the seperation, though, and how it would affect our relationship.
