Rewatch of Supernatural 2022
Season 7
I jumped in to season 7 optimistically-season 6 was pretty good, so season 7 had to be better than I remembered it being, right?
Yeah, no. Sadly it was worse than I remembered.
My bitch about season 7
So many things went wrong. First of all, the big bad monsters are taking over corporate America and turning all of us into food-a) I am not interested in another lecture about Americans’ shortcomings, that we’re all just like sheep in how easily we are manipulated-I get enough of that in real life news-and b) it didn’t feel like Sam and Dean had that much of a personal stake. Yes, the apocalypse was going to blow up the world, but it was very personal to Sam and Dean as the archangels’ vessels and that’s why I cared. Bobby had more of a personal investment in taking down Dick Roman because Roman killed him-think of how much more effective it would have been if Dean had that arc of avenging Bobby and Sam had to hold him back from reckless behavior.
Even more disappointing, though, was Sam’s broken wall arc. It started out intensely with Sam not being able to distinguish his hallucination from reality…and then ‘he had it under control’ all the way from episode 4 until episode 15. Then 3 episodes of crazy, and poof, it’s over. I am assuming they didn’t want to pay to have Mark Pellegrino in the whole season but what Sam was experiencing was just dropped! They could have had voices, or flashes of things Sam was seeing-for instance, in the episode where the hallucinations come back, ‘Repo Man,’ the patrons in the library start banging their heads bloody on the tables and then everything’s normal. Bits like that throughout the season would have conveyed there was still something wrong! Plus, I didn’t see the big crisis of ‘Repo Man’-Dean’s missing again-as more triggering than things Sam experienced in other episodes, like when he was being beaten up by killer clowns-wouldn’t that have triggered a hell flashback? Or even just mumbling to himself ‘Is it real’ when Bobby was dying.
There were some individual episodes that were good, but Sam and Dean’s relationship was an afterthought except for some temporary angst when Sam found out Dean had killed Amy after all. The only saving grace to the season was Jensen’s ability to give heartbreaking depth to Dean’s growing depression with just the expression on his face.
All that being said, it’s on to the individual episodes. (I am adding editorial comments after most of these episodes because of my frustration with where things could have been done better.)
127. Meet the New Boss (7.01)-W: Gamble/D: Sgriccia
Road so Far sums up last season
Resumes immediately where last season ended
Bobby kneels first, Dean starts to when Cas stops them: ‘What's the point if you don't mean it? You fear me. Not love, not respect, just fear’
Very clear that this is no longer Cas
Cas revokes the idea of free will for angels: ‘You need a firm hand. You need a father. And I am your father now. Be obedient, children’
Upside-down shot of Dean inside the Impala (Dean has rebuilt that car twice now!)
Not happy with new Cas, but have to say seeing him smite the hypocritical minister was satisfying…
Stain glass window Cas
Sam hides that he’s having flashbacks when he overhears that Dean is expecting the worst, trying to protect Dean-you should know by now that hiding things doesn’t work, Sam
Dean comes up with the idea of binding Death
Fists in Cas’ stomach are icky!
Fulgurate (I think they need fulgurate in a future season as well and they just by it in a new age store…)
Super Dean takes out the homeowner holding a gun on him-only offscreen so we don’t get to see his prowess…
So they are going to summon Death right in the house they just broke into?
Bobby actually says the spell
Pickle chips for Death
Death assumes he’s been summoned to fix Sam’s wall which Dean didn’t know was a problem
Death explains Leviathans
‘I know God, and you, sir, are no God’
Death will give them another eclipse
Cas goes psycho and Misha gets to play yet another version of Cas
Dean is drinking a lot
Dean has given up on trying to do anything-between finding out Sam is not okay and seeing how far gone Cas is, it’s hopeless
Sam prays to Cas anyway
Cas tries to make amends with Dean, Dean rejects him
Lucifer’s explanation Sam is still in hell is terrifying and believable to Sam
Dean doesn’t know where Sam is when it’s time for Cas to return the souls
When Cas appears to die Dean is angry: ‘Cas you child, why didn’t you listen to me?’
Booby and Dean are again thrown around in ways that should leave them really hurt
Ends on cliffhanger!

Lucifer hints at the horrors Sam experienced in the Cage
Tri-County Water Reservoir-how Leviathans could spread so fast
Dean picks up trenchcoat: ‘So he’s gone…dumb son of a bitch’
The stitches in Sam’s hand look very lame-I would have expected Dean to do better than that
Dean is pissed Sam didn’t tell him about Hallucifer-not very helpful, Dean
Lucifer: ‘You can’t torture someone who has nothing left for you to take away’
TV has news about surprise eclipse-nice follow-through
Dr. Sexy TV promo-again nice continuity
Sam obsessing with cleaning his guns
Dean turns on Sam’s GPS-an example of a little thing the writer put in that makes a later scene make sense
Bobby asking how Dean is doing: ‘I keep my marbles in a lead friggin’ box. I’m fine’
Dean can’t allow himself to receive empathy
Jody: ‘You can kiss my ass, Doctor Monster-Face’
Dean: ‘You are never gonna be okay, Sam’-we don’t learn till later that was Hallucifer talking
‘This discussion does not require a weapons discharge!’
Dean shows Sam that the pain in real life feels different than the pain in hell to ground him
Bobby’s house is burned down-the scene is so dark I couldn’t tell what was wrong with the house until Dean said it
Dean’s call to Bobby: ‘If you’re gone, I swear, I am going to strap my Beautiful Mind brother into the car and I’m gonna drive us off the pier. You asked me how I was doing? Well, not good!’
That was such a minor fight to break Dean’s leg!
Hallucifer: ‘Maybe I’m not real’**
Another cliffhanger!!!
**I think this was a major mistake, to take the suspense out of Sam’s situation so fast
129. The Girl Next Door (7.03)-W: Dabb & Loflin/D: Ackles!!!
Recap: Sam/Lucifer; Leviathans in water; Sioux Falls Hospital takeover
Dean is frantic in the ER
Dean is totally loopy when he comes to and falls out of bed
Bobby just leaves loopy Dean to get dressed
Chase scene nerve-wracking because we don’t know the proximity of the Leviathans to Dean
3 weeks later jump
Dean and Bobby watching Spanish soap opera
Sam ‘checks out’ of conversation and we hear Lucifer’s voice (this is what they needed to keep doing!!!)
Smart Bobby had copies of the books that burned in his house
Dean requests pie, gets cake…C’mon, Sam…
Sam picks up case from newspaper in store
Leviathans have already infiltrated society to the point of having a guy who has set up a credit card notification on the Winchesters
Sam flashback to researching kitsune in Lincoln Nebraska 1998 (Sam is 15)
Flashback Sam has his own cellphone
Ad on TV for ‘My Bloody Valentine 3-D’ movie LOL
Wildebeest documentary on TV-again a nice continuity touch
Bobby is very laid back about Sam being on his own: ‘Look, he says he’s okay’
Sam wearing suit
Dean is listed in Sam’s phone as Lars Ulrich
Amy: ‘I’m not just some murderer. I had to’ (Where have we heard that justification before?)
Flashback Sam: ‘You don’t want to see him (John) when he’s drinking’
Why on earth would Dean punch Sam in the face when Sam just had a major head trauma???
Sam admits to Dean he let Amy go
Flashback Amy kills her mom to save Sam-Sam explains this to Dean as to why he let Amy go
To Dean it’s black-and-white, Amy is a monster and has to be killed
Sam asks Dean to trust him on this and Dean says okay
Sam drives
Dean needs a refill on a bottle of pills (that element promptly gets dropped)
Dean: ‘But people... They are who they are. No matter how hard you try, you are what you are. You will kill again…eventually the other shoe will drop. It always does’
Dean eases her body down gently
Dean to Amy’s son: ‘You got someone you can go to?...You ever kill anyone? Well if you do I’ll come back for you’
Amy’s son: ‘The only person I’m gonna kill is you’-It would have been sweet if this kid had been brought back in the later seasons
130. Defending Your Life (7.04)-W: Glass/D: Singer
Recap: Sam’s state of mind; previous ep
First episode this year that starts with a real teaser
Boys in suits, working a ‘regular’ case
Sam thanks Dean for trusting him about Amy-ouch
Smart Sam (or lazy writing) immediately figures out the red dirt is from the nearby apple orchard
Dean thinks victims deserve what they are getting-ignoring that they have been trying to make amends
Dean hits on the bartender who is definitely interested
Dean is pounding down drinks at the bar
Dean: ‘You ever, uh... You ever do something behind someone's back because you had to?’ Bartender: ‘Now you feel bad? Well, Dean, if you had to, why feel guilty? That doesn't make any sense’
Dean gives himself a pep talk while waiting for the bartender: ‘It's been a while. But you owe yourself. It's nothing but a ground ball - you just got to put your mitt down. You are Dean Winchester. This is what you do’
Sam gets to use his pre-law schooling
As Osiris interrogates the witnesses he is saying what Dean believes, that he is responsible for Jo and Sam being hunters even though they both deny it was Dean’s fault: ‘This is solely about how Dean feels, way down deep’
When Osiris asks if Dean wants him to call the last witness, the audience sees Amy-did Osiris give Dean that vision too or how/why did Dean think it would be her?
I want to know what Sam said to the rabbi about why he needed the ram’s horn shofur
Dean is resigned, not fighting about dying
Jo tries to convince Dean it’s not his fault, he doesn’t believe her
Sam doesn’t feel guilty any more-he paid his dues in hell
Sam: ‘Sometimes I see Lucifer when I friggin' brush my teeth…but I kind of feel good’
Episode as a whole isn’t terrible, but here is where they drop the Hallucifer thread when it would have been so easy to just add a couple voiceovers when Sam is on his own
131. Shut up, Dr. Phil (7.05)-W: Bucker & Ross-Leming/D: Sgriccia
Recap: Witches lore; Leviathans; Amy issue
Dean is sleeping in his clothes
Dean having nightmares
Drinking first thing in the morning
Sam out jogging because he is perfectly fine
Dean is spiraling, Sam is coping
Sam is sporting impressive sideburns this season
Suits seem to fit even better this season
More random, seemingly unrelated deaths just like last episode
Dean still sharp enough to spot the hex coins
Mid-day drinking for Dean
Stark has a framed picture signed by Trump
Smart Sam sets off car alarm to warn Dean
Bobby gives them a spell to use against witches-lore on how to handle witches clearly evolving
Dean as marriage counselor???
Sam: ‘When a relationship cracks, usually both parties have a hand in it’
Starks are left without repercussion
Don Stark saves the boys from Maggie’s hex and from the Leviathan
Sam tries to get Dean to tell him what’s bothering him
Stunt casting episode, and Sam is fine…ugh
132. Slash Fiction (7.06)-W: Thompson/D: Showalter
Recap: Leviathan lore, Amy
Cold-blooded murders by Sam and Dean-WTF?
Leviathans know all about Winchesters from being in Cas
‘They’re wearing our face…this is personal’
Surprisingly, Sam agrees with Dean that they need to go after the Leviathans
We meet Frank Devereaux who is a wonderfully developed character
They have to ditch the Impala
Jody: ‘Bobby! Let someone be nice to you for five minutes’
Dean violently cuts down the My Little Pony hanging from the rearview mirror in the POS car
Dean singing along to ‘All Out of Love’
Leviathan Sam and Dean complaining about how messed up Sam and Dean’s heads are
Cuts to what the real FBI is doing to track the fake Sam and Dean
Some Bobby backstory from Leviathan Bobby: ‘You and dad. Now that’s a can of scorpions’-nice foreshadowing
I like how this sheriff does a 180 when he sees the Leviathans in the station
Leviathan Dean taunts Sam, then reveals about Amy
When Dean rescues Sam, Sam just stares blankly for a minute (a Hallucifer line would have been great there)
Sam walks away from Dean
This episode was engaging
133. The Mentalists (7.07)-W: Acker & Blacker/D: Rohl
Recap: Amy
Skeptical guy’s face in the teaser LOL
Dean alone, stealing pathetic car
Dean in suit, investigating case by himself
When Dean sees Sam in the restaurant he sits down and starts talking like nothing is wrong-Sam doesn’t respond until the waiter gives Dean his free affirmation: ‘you are a virile manifestation of the divine’ and then Sam smirks a little
Boys have been apart a week and a half
Dean: ‘Sam. Look, we're both here. All right, the chance of either one of us leaving while people are still dying out there…You might as well bite the bullet and work with me on this one…I'm just saying, let's try and stop the killings. That's it’
Melanie: ‘…I honestly read people…Like you two - long-time partners, but a lot of tension. [Gestures to SAM.] You're pissed. [Gestures to DEAN.] And you're stressed’
Sam must have been driving his own car to get there but he gets in Dean’s car
Frank gave them IDs as FBI agents Smith and Smith but Dean says he’s Agent Bourne
‘There's fake whoo-whoo crap, and there's real whoo-whoo crap’
Museum guide about sibling acts: ‘Never ended well for the siblings’
Message from Ellen for Dean: ‘If you don’t tell someone how bad it really is she’ll kick your ass from beyond’-really random
Dean gets all self-righteous that Sam shouldn’t be pissed at him: ‘I put down a monster who killed four people, and if you didn't know her, you'd have done the same thing…But killing Amy was not wrong. You couldn't do it, so I did. That's what family does - the dirty work. And I woulda told you, eventually, once I knew that this whole "waving a gun at Satan" thing was a one-time show…you can be pissed all you want, but quit being a bitch’-This defensiveness fits with where Dean is right now but I wanted to smack him
Camille dying after the boys thought the case was over is really sad, especially since Camille was a cool character
Waiter asks if Dean wants anything else-Dean: ‘…if you affirmate me, I'm gonna punch you in the face’
Sam caves: ‘You were right. About Amy. If she was... just any monster, I'm not sure I could have let her walk away…I get why you did it. You were just trying to make sure no one else got hurt’
Engaging case but the fix-up between Sam and Dean was just too fast and glossed over, and there’s nothing to indicate Hallucifer is anything important now
134. Season 7, Time for a Wedding (7.08)-W: Dabb & Loflin/D: Andrew
Recap: Amy issue and resolution; Supernatural books; Becky
Dean tell girl at strip club his troubles under guise of it being his friend’s problem whose brother’s reactor blew and he’s acting all right which is worrying
Apparently Sam and Dean have an annual sacred pilgrimage to Vegas that we never heard about before…
Suits
Fake-out of flickering light in the chapel hallway
Title card is exploding wedding cake
‘Have you forgotten the average lifespan of your hook-ups?’
Sam: ‘…I’m moving on with my life…I don’t need you anymore’
Hello, Garth!
How does Becky get unconscious Sam from her house to the cabin???
They haven’t consummated their marriage yet, thank goodness for that reference
Becky actually kills the henchman demon
Crowley: ‘This isn't Wall Street! This is Hell! We have a little something called integrity’
Crowley’s been keeping the demons away from the boys so they can go after the Leviathans
Dean to Garth: ‘You…don’t suck’
I despise this episode for its destruction of Becky’s character. When we’ve seen her previously, as the obsessive superfan, yes, she’s been a bit over-the-top but there was still something relatable in her passion for Supernatural. However turning her into someone who believes she can magic-potion her way into happily-ever-after with Sam was uncalled for and felt like a slap in the face to all the female fans. If they needed to use the magic love potion idea it should have been done with a stranger. Also, where was Hallucifer while all this was going on? He should have been having a field day when the potion started wearing off and when Sam was tied to the bed
135. How to Win Friends and Influence Monsters (7.09)-W: Edlund/D: Bee
Recap: Leviathan, Frank
Squatting in abandoned house; we get to see them hotwiring power for the place
Dean says they’ve been living this way for weeks
Dean: ‘We’ve steered the bus away from the cliff twice already…What if the bus wants to go over the cilff?’ (In view of season 15, this could be viewed as Chuck giving the boys another challenge…)
Lore dump about Jersey Devils that never show up in the case
Suits
Biggersons
Bobby taught the boys most of the outdoor tracking they know but the boys wouldn’t shoot deer
Skill leveling-up? Bobby and Sam do autopsy on the body and can identify deformed organs???
High Dean LOL
‘I think you pissed off my sandwich’
Sam to Bobby: ‘Seeing Lucifer's fine with me…I'm not saying it's fun…I kind of see it as the best-case scenario…at least all my crazy's under one umbrella, you know? I kind of know what I'm dealing with’-so Hallucifer is no big deal, then…
Dean to Bobby: ‘I'm talking the way a person talks when they've had it, when they can't figure out why they used to think all this mattered’
Leviathan doctor about additive: ‘Once the subject tries it, they crave more within a few hours. With the very first dose, it starts to work on their DNA…’-so how come Dean was okay after eating 2 sandwiches???
The first of the Dick Roman video clips
The first clue about what the Leviathans are planning
Bobby gets shot
This is a set-up episode-giving us lots of Sam & Dean bonding with Bobby to make the next episode hurt more, and starting to lay out the Leviathan endgame. A great opportunity was missed-Hallucifer could have made some wicked comments about body organs while Sam was doing the autopsy…
136. Death’s Door (7.10)-W: Gamble/D: Singer
Recap: Leviathans, Bobby getting captured and shot
Back-and-forth memories in Bobby’s head include hunting with Rufus; his final fight with his wife Karen; playing catch with Dean instead of shooting practice; memories of Sam and Dean; and the shooting of his abusive father
‘You break everything you touch’
Sam likes peanutbutter and banana sandwiches and hates licorice; Dean thinks those are awful sandwiches and loves licorice
Around 1989 Bobby took Dean out to play catch instead of shooting practice and argued with John about it on the phone later (Dean is around 10)
Dean needs to believe Bobby is going to be fine-Sam is trying to be realistic
Sam presses his hand-so Hallucifer is there-why not let us hear how he’s tormenting Sam???
Dean to Roman: ‘You’re either laughing because you’re scared or you’re laughing because you’re stupid. I’ll see you soon, Dick’
Reaper: ‘Bobby... you've helped. You got handed a small, unremarkable life, and you did something with it’
The silence and slow motion of the ER when Bobby dies
The Reaper was both tough and compassionate
‘Stay or go?’-we are kept in the dark about Bobby’s decision for a bit
Probably the best episode of the season. And it would have made much more sense to keep the focus on Dean going after Roman to the point of recklessness than switching it to Bobby later. Also I would think Hallucifer would be more active after this trauma than when it actually happens in the season…
137. Adventures in Babysitting (7.11)-W: Glass/D: Szwarc
Week 1-boys just sitting in grief
Week 2-Dean obsessed with figuring out what Bobby’s numbers mean
Week 3-Sam starts to move on, wondering about notifying other hunters
Sam answers Bobby’s phone when Dean won’t
Sam going to help the girl who called, Dean going to Frank for more on Roman
Paid Frank $15,000 to track the numbers
Leviathans have infiltrated everywhere
Figuring out the numbers are co-ordinates with one number missing-kind of a stretch here…
Sam in suit on case
Frank and Dean take cherry-picker to field Roman bought-Dean goes up in the cherry-picker, Frank sees cameras, and Dean comes down-what was the point of that scene???
Dean sleeps for 36 hours at Frank’s
Frank: ‘Decide to be fine til the end of the week. Make yourself smile because you're alive and that's your job. And do it again the next week…I call it being professional. Do it right, with a smile, or don't do it’
Krissy is quite the actress with Sam and feisty with Dean
Dean knows vetala hunt in pairs because he hunted one that turned out to be 2 when Sam was at Stanford
Sam lures the vetala to drink him to save Krissy’s dad from a fatal drinking
Dean handcuffs Krissy to the steering wheel and asks for her lockpicks
Dean is about to kill one of the vetala when Krissy runs in and gets herself grabbed, giving the other vetala leverage to make Dean drop his knife. While Krissy does eventually stab the vetala holding her, her grandstanding made the situation more dangerous. Yet when she later says she saved Dean’s bacon he agrees-Uh-uh, no way should Krissy get credit for saving anyone!
Sam when Dean asks if he’s all right: ‘No, I’m definitely not…’-really?
Dean’s face when he’s trying to follow Frank’s advice--heartbreaking
Again, Hallucifer could have had a field day with Sam being helpless in the vetala’s lair
Mixed bag of an episode-vetala case interesting, Krissy an interesting character, and Frank is always entertaining…but definitely spots that could have been improved
138. Time After Time (7.12)-W: Thompson/D: Sgriccia
Recap: Leviathans, Jody, Bobby’s death
Jump right into a case
Sam: ‘What’s the plan here?’-Dean: ‘Don’t die’
Why do they split up? The guy is walking down a well-lit alley, why did Dean tell Sam to take the street???
2 days earlier
Jody clues them in to a possible case, she keeps a lookout for weird things now
Boys pull up to abandoned house already wearing suits-odd
Rock/paper/scissors to who gets the bedroom, Sam wins-again, kind of odd, that was a big house and there would have been more than one bedroom, what was wrong with the others?
Using Agent Smith IDs
Suits with overcoats
Smart Dean-Frank showed him how to hack into surveillance cameras (and Sam wants to know how to do that)
When cop tells Dean it’s 1944 Dean counts on his fingers to figure how many years back he’s gone
Ezra Moore is that era’s Bobby Singer
Dean says in his time gas is $4/gallon and a black man is president
Jody brings Sam 20 boxes of books from Bobby’s storage (and what happens to those books afterwards?)
Sam and Dean are doing parallel research in different time periods to figure out it is Chronos
Jody finds bottle of Scotch from Rufus (in a lovely continuity we find out why Rufus gave it to Bobby in season 11)
And somebody else tells Dean to suck it up-Ness: ‘Boo hoo, cry me a river, ya nancy! Tell me, are all hunters as soft as you in the future?’
‘Do I have to use my mom voice?’
Smart Dean figures out how to get a message to Sam in the future
Ness threatens innocent girl
11:34 summoning time-but how does the spell know if it’s AM or PM???
Chronos says their future is black ooze
Episode ends very abruptly
Watching Dean in classy duds in 1944 and both of them being smart makes the episode an okay one despite the off-notes. But why isn’t Hallucifer taunting Sam about losing his brother here???
139. The Slice Girls (7.13)-W: Bucker & Ross-Leming/D: Wanek
Recap focuses on things contributing to Dean’s depressed state
Sam driving while Dean sleeps
Dean drinking from Bobby’s flask
Suits
Dean poses as investment banker in the bar hitting on Lydia
Dean says one word in Japanese
Disturbing cuts between the murder and Dean and Lydia’s scene
Dean left his flask at Lydia’s
Missing being able to call Bobby for help
Dean gets the professor to help by suggesting they’ll put in a word with the IRS-nice improvising, Dean
Dean knows something’s off but Sam dismisses his concerns as Dean simply unable to accept Lydia dumped him-not cool to dismiss your brother’s instincts, Sam
Apparently they are carting Bobby’s boxes of books with them from car to car
Sam about Lydia’s baby: ‘Wow. So maybe you're - you’re, uh...-Dean: ‘Don't say it’-Sam: ‘Dude, seriously, a one-night stand, you're just gonna... roll the dice?-Dean: ‘Of course not...Sam. What, do you think I'm brain-dead? Accidents happen. If one even did, which I don't think...’
Bobby’s papers move to display the page about Amazons which causes speculation about Bobby but Sam says it couldn’t be
Sam gets the professor’s cooperation by saying they’ll get his wiretap removed LOL
Sam’s cell gets broken
Emma plays on trust issue and really has a convincing story asking for help to get away
Dean pulls gun on her: ‘…Almost worked. I was expecting your mother’
Dean: ‘You haven’t killed anybody yet, Emma. Walk away’
Sam shoots her
Sam accuses Dean of being ready to let Emma walk when he was all ‘kill the monster’ about Amy
I like this episode, it has a tight, logical story and a huge emotional punch with Sam killing Dean’s monster daughter
Could easily have included some Hallucifer…BTW, the Amazons breed every 2 years so they would have been floating around in seasons 9, 11, 13, and 15…just sayin’
140. Plucky Pennywhistle’s Magic Menagerie (7.14)-W: Dabb & Loflin/D: Rohl
Recap: Dean’s depression, previous episode, clowns
Sam running from clowns
Rainbow splatter title card
60:00:00 Earlier
Dean using a pay phone to call Frank
Dean giving up one-night stands
Now-more Sam fighting clowns
36:36:06 Earlier
Sam’s face at mention of Plucky’s
‘You would dump me and go trolling for chicks’
‘If it bleeds you can kill it’
FBI names Johnson and Jones, not Smith and Smith?
The manager woman at Plucky’s is an interesting character
When Sam interviews the staff he is very heavy-handed, the opposite of when he interviewed the employees in the case with the haunted kidney-feels like this was written to get laughs, not caring about whether it was in character
Boys split up-Sam to protect mom, Dean to check out the sub-basement
Right Friggin’ Now
Sam getting his ass kicked by the clowns
Smart Dean figures out how to take out bad guy
Sam drives up to where Dean is parked by Plucky’s and sheepishly gets out of the car covered in glitter-Dean finds this hilarious. However that clown fight was brutal! Sam should be acting hurt but doesn’t seem injured at all!
Sam gives Dean a rainbow slinky-but when did he have time to get it???
There is a clown laugh when the screen goes black
This episode annoys me greatly. Someone in the writer’s room must have said ‘We should have someone run through with a unicorn horn’ and this episode was written around that visual. Sigh. Besides the fact that Sam should have been hurt in the clown fight, Hallucifer should have been having a field day…and Dean should have had some empathy for putting Sam through that stress when Sam’s state of mind is still wonky…except, of course, why would Dean think Sam was having any Hallucifer problems when show has been ignoring them? (Can you tell I’m bitter about how Sam’s mental state was handled all season?)
141. Repo Man (7.15)-W: Edlund/D: Wright
Recap: Lilith; don’t scratch the wall
4 years ago (would have been season 3)
Dean torturing a demon to find Lilith
The victim, Jeffrey, gives them permission to keep torturing when the demon lets him up briefly
Dean is brutal (why doesn’t the demon smoke out?)
Sam still has season 7 hair
Present day
Surprise! Sam has Hallucifer vision!!!
Suits with overcoats
Nora says she tried to call the boys but none of their phones are working-a flash of continuity since Frank had them change all their phones
Jeffrey is a very sympathetic character, showing us the aftermath of what probably happens fairly often to the victims of Supernatural
So because Sam says ‘shut up’ to Hallucifer all of a sudden Sam can no longer control what he’s been keeping locked down all this time???
Dean can get out of being tied up for a change
How did the devil’s trap get on the ceiling in the warehouse???
Dean passes out on the bed in his clothes
Sam is engulfed in an hallucination
Lucifer laughs after the screen goes black
I remember on first viewing that I thought this was a really creepy episode because of Jeffrey’s character turning from so sympathetic to horrible. I have very different thoughts-all negative-on rewatch. First, the Dean torturing of 4 years ago-having just watched season 3, this feels very wrong, they weren’t this coldly brutal back then, this was before Dean went to hell, and Sam would surely have objected. Secondly, the use of ‘big’ women as the type of victim was distasteful. And, as already questioned, why was this the case that made Sam lose control of Hallucifer???
142. Out With the Old (7.16)-W: Klein & Singer/D: Showalter
Recap: curse boxes; Dick Roman’s field
Shoes are pristine in a pool of blood-that’s not a warning…
Suits with overcoats
Sam has told Dean he’s having hallucination issues
Fake-out with the woman chopping vegetables
They call the cops while they are still in the victim’s house?
Dean to shop owner’s son: ‘…feeling guilty ain’t gonna bring ‘em back’
Smart Dean’s instincts tell him to check out the realtor
All of a sudden Sam can’t sleep because of Hallucifer
Leviathans want to cure cancer-this is supposed to add to the mystery of what their grand plan is…
We don’t see what the boys did about George-I really hope they beheaded and boraxed him after he ate his boss
Frank is gone and his trailer is trashed (but we never find out for sure that he’s dead-I like to think he got away and left it looking like he was taken to fool everyone…)
Meh episode. Annoyed about the sudden severity of Hallucifer, and the realtor lady was incredibly annoying
143. The Born-Again Identity (7.17)-W: Gamble/D: Singer
Recap: Cas broke Sam’s wall; current Hallucifer issues
Sam has gone 5 days without sleep
From that massive car hit Sam only has some broken ribs and lacerations???
Dean is upset by Sam’s acceptance that he’s not going to survive (and yet multiple times this season Dean’s expressed hopelessness)
Bobby’s book falls to the floor with the pertinent phone number falling out
Cas?!?
Emmanuel Cas is married to Daphne-whatever happened to her???
Dean is at a loss when faced with amnesiac Cas-angry and also upset that Cas isn’t really Cas
Emmanuel Cas has a very different voice than Cas (kudos, Misha)
‘God wanted her to find me’
Dean: ‘…what if you were some kind of...bad guy?’-Emmanuel Cas: ‘I don’t feel like a bad person’
Dean’s cellphone is broken
Here’s Meg
Why didn’t Dean just kill Meg???
Even while going crazy Sam still prioritizes helping people
Meg tells Emmanuel Cas he is really an angel
The music while Cas has flashed of remembering fits really well
Once he’s Cas again his voice lowers
Dean: ‘…you did the best you could at the time’-amazing display of forgiveness there, Dean
Dean gives Cas the trenchcoat that must have been moved from car to car (and it’s still bloody)
Cas magically takes Sam’s mental distress away and he’s perfectly fine now
What can I say about this episode? They decided to bring Cas back for the fans and they needed to fix Sam, so this is what we got
144. Party On, Garth (7.18)-W: Glass/D: Sgriccia
Recap: Garth
Garth is filmed heroically, first the dramatic feet-to-head shot as he gets out of his car, then slo-mo at the grave
Sam is driving
Suits
Garth in military outfit
One sip of mom’s drink gets the little girl drunk?
Mr. Fizzles
Garth drives, Dean is his passenger
Garth questions if Bobby’s ghost is around
Boys get drunk
Sam says he tried to contact Bobby by talking board, Dean pissed Sam didn’t tell him
Smart Garth figured out the janitor is the owner’s son by how he treated the kid
Improvised sword blessing
Sword flies into Dean’s hand
Drunk Sam directs sober Dean where to swing
‘What’d I miss?’-Garth was knocked at the start the same as he was last time and he asks the same question
Dean calls out to Bobby, thinking his ghost must be there
Sam rationalizes the incidents to convince Dean Bobby isn’t here
But Bobby is there and Dean walks right past him
I like Garth. He is the anti-Dean and yet he is equally smart, and the mentally healthiest hunter we ever meet. And he is written comedically but not mockingly.
145. Of Grave Importance (7.19)-W: Buckner & Ross-Leming/D: Andrew
Recap: Bobby’s death, discussion of his possible ghost
Annie, hunter-wants to return some of Bobby’s books
Roman is sponsoring archeological digs all over
Sam says Annie and Bobby ‘had a thing’-then Dean says he had one too-then Sam says he did as well when he was soulless (I could just feel the writers smirking as they wrote this)
Dean adds booze to his coffee
Dean resigned that Bobby was wishful thinking
Annie never saw her reaper
Bobby blacked out for 2 weeks after knocking the book off the table (in ‘The Born-Again Identity’)
Ghosts have to be either zen or very angry to move things
Very conveniently ghost Victoria was able to leave a voicemail on Annie’s phone…
Bobby: ‘All right now. I can kill werewolves, fix a Pinto and bake cornbread. I will be damned if I can't get Zen!’
So ghosts can ‘eat’ other ghosts…
Bobby got really good really fast at being able to move things
Why do all the bodies have bloody mouths?
Smart boys figure out right away that the ghost planted something on Sam
Dean is upset that Bobby ducked his reaper to stay-even though he’s been wanting Bobby to really be there up to this point…make up your mind, Dean
Sam, ever the optimist, thinks maybe they can make it work with Bobby-Dean of course has to have the opposite view: ‘It ain't the natural order of things. Everything is supposed to end...What are the odds this ends well?’
Another episode written to achieve an end, in this case to make Bobby’s ghost viable for the rest of the season. And the ghosts being unable to find their own bodies seems weird.
146. The Girl With the Dungeons and Dragons Tattoo (7.20)-W: Thompson/D: McCarthy
Recap: Frank, Bobby’s death and ghost
Bobby is unstable
Huge exposition dump by Bobby of the entire Leviathan plan
Post-death email from Frank
Frank’s hard drive is in ‘the middle of the Death Star’
All of the above is in a very long teaser
5 hours earlier we meet Charlie
‘You have that thing, that spark that makes humans so special. Not everyone has it, you know. Most people can be replaced, but people like you are impossible to copy’
Boys don’t want Bobby involved out of concern he’ll go vengeful
Love Charlie with the boys
Commercial for Sucrocorp feels like a genuine commercial
Bobby sneaks along
Sam knows Harry Potter
Charlie: ‘Kick it in the ass’
Dean helping Charlie flirt is priceless, especially thinking of Dean knowing them because of being on the receiving end of those lines…
Nice visual of split screens to keep the tension high
Trump referenced as helping in Roman’s email
Fake-out to the package delivery, then back to ‘2 hours earlier’
Sam switched the suitcases (how did they know what the suitcase was going to look like?)
Bobby gets blamed for going out of control but honestly he did save Charlie, her arm got broken when Bobby shoved Pete who crashed into Charlie, Bobby didn’t touch her
Robbie Thompson tends to be revered as a fan favorite among the writers, and he absolutely nailed Charlie’s character and wrote great dialog, but the episode itself is kind of muddled…And it really shows the poor pacing of the season to require Bobby to give a 5-minute exposition of what the bad guys have been planning all season before the episode can begin.
147. Reading is Fundamental (7.21)-W: Edlund/D: Edlund
Recap: Meg, Cas takes Sam’s hallucinations, Roman getting his package (interestingly this includes a scene not in the previous episode of Sam and Dean both in airport worker uniforms walking together)
Hi Kevin!
Kevin’s girlfriend is prescient, just not like she means: ‘One day college isn’t going to matter any more’
Clay around the artifact was red last episode, now it’s gray?
As Dean chips at the clay: ‘That sound like somebody saying, "No, wait, stop," to you?...Oh well’
Meteorologist on TV: ‘Baffled? No, I'm not baffled. Frankly, I'm offended. This is not the way weather behaves’ LOL
Cas has been comatose until this episode
Metatron mentioned
Dean banishes all the angels including Cas who lands in Perth, Australia at a dog racing track
Angels want to take the Keeper of the Word to meditate in the desert
Cas: ‘Let's leave off angel-proofing sigils or I'll be expelled, too’-Sam: ‘As long as we're invisible to your Garrison buddies, it works for me’-Huh? This makes no sense
Dean to Kevin: ‘What can I say? You've been chosen. And it sucks. Believe me. There's no use asking why me? 'cause the angels - they don't care. I think maybe they just don't have the equipment to care. Seems like when they try, it just breaks them apart’
Meg says her ‘cause’ now is to take down Crowley and that’s why the boys should trust her
Angel Hester: ‘When Castiel first laid a hand on you in Hell, he was lost!’
Kevin has the tablet translated very quickly
Good introduction of Kevin, and establishing the ‘new’ Cas for setting up the end of the season
148. There Will Be Blood (7.22)-W: Dabb & Loflin/D: Bee
Recap: Alphas, Leviathan plot, Bobby’s ghost concerns, Kevin
Kevin bravely resists Roman until his mom is threatened
Sam, of course, worries about what happens after Roman is taken out while Dean just wants to focus on the immediate problem
Crowley doesn’t know Cas is back but he does know about the alpha vamp
Sam feels Bobby is now a danger to keep around, no longer thinks Bobby can keep from turning vengeful
All the pieces in this episode just snap right into place, no real tension about figuring things out
Now everything with corn syrup is contaminated-wow, that got through the food chain REALLY fast
More ‘fat dumb Americans’ ‘jokes’
Bobby takes over the housekeeper via ghost possession
Dean is uncharacteristically non-snarky to the alpha vamp
The alpha vamp has gravitas in his evilness-he doesn’t need to exchange snarky banter, he is so old he doesn’t have to play games-a big contrast to Roman who needs to show off how superior he is
Smart Dean had one last syringe tucked away
Showdown with alpha vamp one of the most intense scenes of the entire season
Dean prepared to kill the deal if he doesn’t get the little boy-alpha concedes because he sees the concession as a momentary irritation in the big picture and his pride can handle that
Alpha vamp: ‘See you next season’ (We do see him again but several seasons later…)
The scene with the alpha vamp makes the episode worth sitting through
149. Survival of the Fittest (7.22)-W: Gamble/D: Singer
Road so Far of the season
Have to root for Crowley over Roman in contract negotiations
Search for the bone of a righteous person is lame
Crowley’s machinations around the boys are getting old…
Care more about Kevin in this episode than anyone else
Straight-arrow Kevin knows how to pick locks?
Bobby almost kills Sam
Stop the action around Roman to put Bobby to rest
Bobby: ‘When it’s your time-go’
Cas can see which Roman is the real one
Dean asks Cas for help in retrieving Impala and Cas decides to help
Shots of the car driving toward Sucrocorp look like there are 2 people in it but only Meg gets out when it crashes
Smart Dean had a fake-out bone to catch Roman off guard
Crowley references what will happen with Leviathans remaining: ‘Without a master plan, the Levis are just another monster. Hard to stomp, sure, but you love a challenge. Your job is to keep them from organizing’ (I am pretty sure we never encounter another Leviathan in the 8 seasons remaining…)
Crowley ends up with Meg and Kevin
Sam is alone
Dean and Cas are in Purgatory, then Cas vanishes
So this finale is all about the clever Leviathan plot details which are immediately irrelevant at the end of the episode. I never felt any emotional concern for Sam and Dean. A fittingly lame finale to a lame season…
