But Can the Leopard Change Its’ Spots?
Sam made it back to the motel thirty minutes before Dean and Dad showed up. Enough time for his breathing to slow down, not give away that he’d raced to get away from Amy’s house, using backyards and alleys because he didn’t know which street the Impala would be coming down.
When he heard the leonine roar of the car pulling into the parking lot, Sam grabbed the first book from his backpack and opened it randomly, sprawling on the bed in his usual studying posture.
He looked up as Dean entered the room.
“D’ja get it?”
His dad, following through the door on Dean’s heels, shook his head and snorted.
“Damnedest thing. It was already dead when we got there. Stabbed in the heart like you said. Musta been another hunter on the case …”
Dad’s voice trailed off as he headed into the tiny bathroom.
“So, um, what’d you do then?” Keeping his interest casual, Sam glanced down at his textbook until he was sure his face was blank again.
Dean was standing in front of the dresser mirror, running his hand through his hair as he waited for Dad to exit.
“We dragged it out and burned it, cleaned up the mess. Pretty sloppy work for another hunter, to leave it like that.”
Dad came out to hear Dean’s last words. “Yeah, I’m gonna have to talk to Bobby about who else would have been working this. Not acceptable at all. Whoever it was needs to be taught how to finish the job.”
Sam looked down again. All he’d been able to think was to get out of there, get Amy out of there, before Dad and Dean showed up. Before they’d have to kill her because she was just another monster.
I’ve never killed anyone.
I don’t want to hurt you.
Do you want to hurt me?
Sam shoved his book to the side and stood up, grabbed his jacket from the foot of the bed.
“Where’re you going, Sam?”
“Outside … sir. I just need … a little air after all this … studying.”
“You stay by the motel, you hear?”
“Yessir.”
Sam wandered to the far end of the lot, hitched one hip up on the side of the concrete divider between the motel and the gas station next to it.
She was a monster by fact of being born one.
She hadn’t killed anyone.
He was a hunter … well, he was supposed to be, anyway. He mostly helped with salt-and-burns … though he had been along on that werewolf hunt a couple months ago …
He’d let Amy get away.
If she killed now it was on him. She’d said she didn’t want to be like her mother, but she’d have to eat sometime.
She’d killed her mother to save his life. She’d picked a stranger, a human, a hunter over her own flesh-and-blood. Didn’t that prove she wasn’t evil?
“So how’d it go talking with a girl, Sam?”
He’d been so wrapped in his own mind that Sam hadn’t heard Dean approach.
“I, uh, yeah, not so good. She wasn’t … interested.”
“Don’t take it too hard, Sammy. You just need to find a nice geeky girl and offer to be her study buddy.” Dean grinned and slapped Sam lightly on the shoulder. “There are hot geeky chicks, you just have to look for them. In libraries, you know. Where you like to hang out anyway.” Dean smirked. “Wait, that’s where you were today. You sly dog. So was she cute? She have little black librarian glasses? Or was she the librarian? You going for the older woman, Sammy?”
“Shut up, Dean! It wasn’t like that at all! She just couldn’t … her mother didn’t want her talking to boys, okay?”
“Well, if she won’t break her mother’s rule to talk to you then she isn’t worth the time.”
“’S’not like that, Dean.” Sam twisted away from Dean’s hovering. “She was nice. She just … we didn’t … she had to leave, okay?”
“Hey, don’t get your shorts twisted. Everybody strikes out once in a while … even happened to me once or twice.” Dean seemed to consider. “Well, once.” His brother’s grin was cocky bright.
Sam stepped away. Dean couldn’t understand.
“Dad thinks you did a nice job on the research, by the way. Never run into one of these suckers before … heh, suckers literally, aren’t they?” Sam rolled his eyes at Dean’s obvious satisfaction with his observation. “But Dad’s putting it all in the journal for the next one.”
“Maybe we’ll never run into another one. They’re rare in the United States.”
“Well, geekboy, there’s one less around tonight. Even if we didn’t kill it, someone did. I’m gonna go pick up supper. Want to come with?”
Be careful, Amy. Please don’t kill anyone.
“Naw, I … have to finish studying for a test tomorrow.”
“Really, Sam, not much point, we’ll be leaving tomorrow or the next day, Dad’s got a couple leads for the next hunt.”
“I’m still gonna study. And I’m not very hungry.”
“Suit yourself.” Dean palmed the car keys he’d pulled from his jacket. “Tell Dad I’ll be back in a bit.”
The Impala grumbled to life as Sam drifted back to the motel room unable to stop the afternoon replaying in his mind.
Find another way, Amy. I don’t want to have to kill you someday.
