» Weakness: Astyanax has got several issues. And I mean several. While his parents and the court tried to maintain the most stable of environments for Astyanax, the fact that he grew up in a war certainly affected him and not always for the better. He is skittish, especially around loud noises. He isn’t particularly “big and strong like Daddy” because it is assumed that he was kept indoors to avoid exposure to too much of the war. He is studious, yes, and can “play-fight” with a fake sword but definitely does not possess the kind of warrior skills that he would have possessed had he been trained. In all honesty, he’d probably get his ass whooped.

Of course, as with any child showered with wealth and attention, he’s a bit of a brat. Let’s just say that “plays well with others” isn’t exactly on Astyanax’s list of talents or skills. He’s an only child and presumably stayed with Hecuba and Andromache the entire length of the war. He’s not exactly sociable. He can be introverted in social situations, preferring the company of older women. However, having been used to just getting his way, he’s not particularly accepting of the fact that the other kids may have ideas of their own.

He has separation anxiety. Even though he was more or less used to having Hector leave quite frequently, he doesn’t like having anyone leave. He is a total grandma’s/mama’s boy and clingy to his womenfolk. He can be a total brat about it, too. That is, crying, screaming and kicking when he’s left alone.

» History: Son of Hector and Andromache, Astyanax was born during the Trojan War (nothing like a war to get the testosterone going, I suppose). Nothing much is said about his childhood since that was completely overshadowed by the ongoing battles. It can be assumed, however, that he was raised as normally as any son of the heir apparent could be except for the fact that a war was waging outside the kingdom’s walls.

Not much is known about Astyanax’s story until the war comes to a close. It is said that after the sacking and fall of Troy, Andromache took Astyanax and hid him in Hector’s tomb - which is where Neoptolemus would eventually find him and take him to be thrown off the walls of Troy (as per the suggestion of Odysseus the asshole).

Astyanax is taken from the point in his story where Andromache has just taken him into Hector’s tomb and hidden him in the corner.

» Personality: His personality was talked about heavily in the ‘Weakness’ section. A brief recap would be that he is a bit of a brat, has separation anxiety and physically not exactly up to par. As can be assumed for any only child (especially belonging to a wealthy family), Astyanax was showered with affection and the family would have definitely tried to shield him from the ugliness of the world. As it is, he is a sweet child (as Hector could not have a child that is anything less) but he is also not very adept in social situations with other children. Since everyone around him would have been either spoiling or servile, he’s not used to not getting his way and could throw a fit about it. In other words, he’s nice when asking but not so nice when he doesn’t get what he asks for.

He’s definitely more smart than athletic, not having been raised with a father to teach him how to fight and, also, being quite young at the time. His mother would presumably read to him to keep him amused, though it would be unlikely that he was allowed to explore the city or any place beyond the palace walls for fear of exposing him to the death and destruction beyond. Thus, Astyanax can also be a little naïve, not really knowing much of poverty or disease other than a mild cough or the sniffles once in a while.

Having been raised around women, he’s also a little effeminate. He’s not a brawler or a “let’s run around and play” kind of kid. He’s quieter and more subdued and would often prefer a quiet day of reading or dice to a lot of running around and yelling. He’s extremely attached to his mother and father and grandmother and aunties and likes having them all around him. He’s the kind of kid that will pester you about where you’re going until you’ve given him an exact itinerary of all your escapades from the minute you leave to the second you’re going to come back.

He doesn’t quite grasp the concept of death - while he kind of understands that there’s a god called Hades and a place called Tartarus (because you gotta respect your gods), he doesn’t see it as the end to a life but just as another god that they had to offer things to. He wasn’t present at Hector’s funeral and was just told that his father had gone to rest for a very long time and wouldn’t be back home. Shortly thereafter, Andromache was preparing him for the inevitable and he didn’t quite understand what all that was about. He just remembered being very, very scared.

» Sample Journal: Father said everything would be okay.

Mother said Father would fix everything.

Father said we would be safe in the palace.

Aunt Cassandra said we were all going to die.

Mother said Aunt Cassandra was wrong.

…Mother and Father lied. I don’t want to be here but I don’t want to go home.

» Sample Roleplay: Astyanax tried to keep quiet because his mother had said that he needed to be silent or bad things would happen. He held on to her shoulder as she carried him down the palace steps and through hallways. He raised his head slightly as they went under an arch and through two doors. Pinching his lips together, he tried not to whine as Andromache put him down on cold stone and touched the side of his head. As she stepped away, he opened his mouth to cry and complain but she pressed a finger to his lips.

“There, there,” he heard his mother whisper. “I’ll be right back for you, okay? Father will watch you while I fix things. You need to be very quiet, promise?”

Astyanax nodded as his mother stroked his hair. She kissed his forehead and stood up. He saw her look to her right and whisper something under her breath before she turned around and closed the big doors, locking him in. Astyanax tried not to shake as he stood up and climbed onto what they had told him was his Father’s new bed. “Father?” he whispered in the dark. “I know Mother said you needed your rest but we need you right now. We need-“

His sentence was cut off by a sharp scream. He jerked upright, scrambling to maintain balance on the sarcophagus. The screaming got closer and closer and he thought he recognized his mother’s voice-

Astyanax blinked. What was once dark was now light. And there was something fuzzy underneath him instead of stone. He looked up and around. It was a room with chairs and tables and it looked nothing like home. He saw a man behind a table and looked at him quizzically, wondering if it was okay to talk to him. He didn’t recognize the man. Astyanax was just about to start screaming when the man held up a hand to silence him and spoke.

“Astyanax,” the man said to him. “Welcome to the Parthenon.”
