I completely ran out of cash last night, so I went to an ATM this afternoon to restock so I wouldn't be up the creek if something weird happened.

Well something happened.

I put my card into the ATM, put in my pin, asked for money, and waited.  A message popped up on the screen that said the following.

You really need to get a credit card, just so you have emergency money, now.

If your credit score isn't that good have one of your parents co-sign with you. You are responsible, they should trust you. I did this with my mom because it was my first card and I didn't have a score (no score=bad score).

This is coming from someone who pretty much thinks credit cards are a necessary evil and hates having one.
