the woman i was working with was being WAY too nice about it.

Had I been an employee I probably would have done just what you did. Had I been the other customer I might have said something like this, "Well, I wasn't talking to you, crack-whore so go *&^?! ?(*$#@ with someone who cares!" And if she piped up again I just would have pushed her down and beat her with the stantion post.
