I think 'ette' has kind of a 'lite' connotation to it-- like cigarette vs cigar.

And yes, I think that can be traced to something to do with gender, as though girls were cuter, smaller version of people, or something. Like bachelor, bachelorette. "ette" has dainty-ness implications.

My dad's childhood nickname was Booger. So my paternal side of the family used to call me "Boogerette."
