Recently I was re-reading H.P. Lovecraft's essay on writing weird fiction. Some of his technique isn't for me, and I have no desire to try to reproduce his style, as such attempts typically result in the kind of rugose, squamous, and utterly unnameable terrors not fit for the sight of human eyes. I think he is on to something there, and it matches to my taste--but of course taste is highly personal. It's certainly what I try to write--I'm interested in character, characters who could be part of every day life and who are then thrust into situations/events that are extraordinary. That's a big part of the Stephen King appeal to me, for sure...and the biggest struggle I have with Ligotti, whom I otherwise love. Sometimes in his stories I find myself wishing for just a flash of a "real", normal world to ground the utter surrealness of his writing. Of course, that utter surrealness is a big part of the appeal.

If any of that makes any sense. I'm just kind of blathering, instead of working. :)
