I've read and enjoyed both Clan of the Cave Bear and stuff by Ed McBain, but I will take Bastard Out of Carolina under consideration. I've meant to read it but never gotten there.

If you want a book completely away from the usual stuff and have yet to read 100 Years of Solitude, I highly recommend it. I also recommend The Master and the Margarita and the His Dark Materials series by Phillip Pullman.

I third Pullman. In fact, another iSchool alumna introduced me to HDM, and I devoured all three in a marathon 24 hour, no-sleep book orgy.

I was totally jealous when I saw that Breadloaf School of English, where my BFF goes, is offering a class called "Dark Materials: Milton, Blake, Pullman" at its Oxford campus. How cool is that?
