Valentine's Day Ice Skating Meetup
Hello ladies and gents! With February right around the corner, we're excited to announce our Annual Valentine's Day Ice Skating Meetup!
This year's meetup will be hosted by darcy_chan and sweetokashi who are filling in for ilovesquee
This year's meetup will be held on Saturday, February 23rd, from noontime on. Unfortunately, were are unable to open up this year's date for voting due to a number of conflicting events in the month of February (Katsucon, RI Valentine's Meetup, etc.) and some limitations to our own personal schedules. We apologize for this inconvenience, and we sincerely hope that everyone who wishes to attend will be able to!
Additionally, this year, we would like to try a different venu the Kendall Square Rink in Cambridge The Kendall Square rink is an outdoors zamboni-maintained ice rink that offers all-day public skating for $5, with $8 skate rentals (cheaper than Frog Pond!), and a snack bar. The rink is conveniently located 2 blocks from the Kendall/MIT stop on the Red Line, and offers close proximity to a number of restaurants, bakeries, and cafes. For those driving to the meetup, $8 all-day parking is available nearby at the Kendall Square South Garage (350 Kendall St., Cambridge), and the rink does validate parking at the rate of $1 per hour. Please be aware that all attendees wishing to skate will have to sign a liability waiver with the rink, and anyone under the age of 16 needs to be accompanied by a parent or guardian.
As usual, this is a come-as-you-please meetup, meaning that attendees can feel free to come or leave whenever they feel like it. We will collectively decide at the meetup where we want to eat after we're done skating. :)
If you plan on coming, please RSVP below, or on the FB event page. RSVPs aren't necessary to attend, but we would like to get a rough idea of how many people to expect.
** Dress Code Note: As with all of our Lolita meetups, wearing Lolita is strongly encouraged, however in the case of this particular meetup, we do understand if you don't wish to wear the fashion due to extremely cold weather or concerns over comfort or damage. It's important that you dress relatively comfortably and warmly for this event, so bear this in mind when planning what you want to wear.
Tips for Skating in Lolita
1.) Avoid wearing thick socks! If you're going to layer for warmth, layer thin pantyhose or footless tights, but leave the wooly socks at home. Your brand OTKs should be fine, but if you're going to wear sweater tights under them, make sure those tights are footless. Thick socks and tights can affect how your skates fit on your feet, and poorly fitted skates can mean a lot more spills and falls.
2.) Similarly, avoid bulky layers of clothing if you can help it. Bulk makes it hard to move around, and even harder to catch your balance. This is a good meetup to consider wearing Underarmour or thermals underneath your coordinate. Oh, and don't forget the hat and gloves! Unless it's 50*F out like it was last year, you'll probably want them.
3.) Skates, like a good pair of shoes, should hug your feet 'just right', and shouldn't have a lot of extra room at the toe or the heel. When renting figure skates, ask for your usual shoe size, and go from there. Should the skate rental place run out of the size you need, try asking for your corresponding size in Men's (or Women's) skates. Remember that your size in Men's is two sizes smaller than your size in Women's (US Women's 8 = Men's 6). If you have any questions about how tight your skates should be laced, don't hesitate to ask us!
4.) Don't forget to wear your bloomers! ;)
