The other day at the gym the talk was all about how they found a dead bat in the toilet that morning. I couldn't resist mentioning my love of bats...and then when the conversation turned to other scary animals (i.e. snakes) the manager and I had a nice conversation about Animal Planet. Oh Jeff Corwin, you are so very fine... I saw an indigo snake ( Read more... )

Curves is great for women... at first. I understand that they use mostly those machines that depend on hydraulics for resistance training. I know another girl that went to Curves, and she eventually quit it in favor of a full gym because of the lack of versatility that Curves offers. Hell, didn't msredsneakers use to go there, too? That's right, she did, but for the reason that the owner is apparently some bible thumping nutter or something. You'll have to ask her about that.

Yes, you are correct on both counts...except I thought that it had more to do with the other members than the owner. I will not be renewing my membership when it expires. My mom will have to spring for a real gym if she wants to bribe me to exercise again (not that she'll need to - I'm already addicted).

I quit because I think the whole thing is complete fucking bullshit and I wasn't buying it anymore. The contradictions in the concept irked me. It's not about "improving yourself" at all, it's about glooming on to a yet another load of touchy-feely nonsense and patting yourself and your faux community of women on the back while paying for the privlege ( ... )

I basically agree with everything you said here. But I'm getting in shape - it's working - so none of it bothers me. That's my only priority. The chicks-only atmosphere is just a perk, and I'm not expecting to "bond." The franchise I use is extremely laid back and I don't feel any pressure to do anything at all except come and work out.

But in general, Curves is not a real gym and it is extremely limited in terms of what it can do for you. I wouldn't be there if I had to pay for it myself.
