I felt the same way! I am kind of glad I read it ass backwards in that respect, though, because it reminds me that 9/11 didn't cause the wackiness, it just made the existing hysteria exponentially worse, and gave fearmongers an excuse to keep peddling their bullshit.
I remember reading something, whether in that book or an online article by Glassner, about how there was no serious reason to worry about international terrorism, and it was just so strange to read it, like it was...well, a message from the past, which I guess it was, in a sense.
The fearmongering that has always bothered me is the "pedophiles will steal and rape my children!" nonsense. It's like, where do you even start? It's your family and the people you trust that you need to pay more attention to, there are a lot of pedophiles that aren't child molesters, the truly scary people are the ones who seem trustworthy... I usually can't even mount an effective response.
Oh I know, right! What pisses me off is that, the friends I had who were molested by their fathers, their moms KNEW ABOUT IT but were too fucking cowed to do a damn thing. They just let it continue. One girl's mom was actually pissed at HER because she was jealous.
Oversaturation is apparently bring a huge portion of sanity along with it...at least until people start to forget, and the next dieting fad comes along...
Thank you for sharing this with me! I found it very interesting, although I am tired of articles stating things like "obesity is a huge problem in the US" as if it is an absolute fact. SHODDY reporting, that.
I might get a blog post out of that, actually...thanks :) Share things like that with me anytime!
