feeding schedule

I can't seem to figure my girl out. She's 9 weeks, and she's eating really irregularly. Sometimes she'll eat 3 oz's, sometimes 4 or 5 at one sitting. Also she's eating almost every hour, except for the four hours she sleeps at night. Isn't she supposed to go three hours or more between feedings on formula? Is anyone else going thru this or am I the ( Read more... )

You can (and I feel SHOULD) demand feed on formula. Just because you can see the ounces doesn't mean that there is an exact amount per feeding. Remember, if you were nursing her, unless you weighed her after a feed (which you sometimes have to do), you wouldn't know how much she was taking.

Is it just recently she's been eating a lot? Could be a growth spurt. Or do you try a little more each feeding, see if it goes longer?

yes, it is just recently. I don't want to give her more because she might throw up. But it probably is a growth spurt.

I haven't had one puke (yet!) from overeating. When full, on breast or bottle (I did both to various degrees with all 3), they'd turn their head away, shut their mouth, etc. and not eat to the point of barfing.

A little bit about increased feedings, etc.

The only think normal about the way a newborn eats in that there is nothing normal about it. Some babies eat consistantly, some don't. As long as shes HEALTHY and pooping and peeing like she should, then she knows how and what and when to eat best. Theres really no reason to worry about it until she's much older.

My son is almost 7 months old and has eaten the same way since birth.

I do notice when he is sick he will eat more, weird but true.

I always think I'm over feeding him, but he knows when he is full and doesn't want it anymore. He will reject it, spit it out or just plain ignore it. He is a healthy eater, lol. Babies are smarter then we think.

Best of luck...

It always sounds like it could be a growth spurt. If you're concerned call your Ped.

The amount a baby eats can be really erratic. Babies don't know math so they don't care how many ounces they eat :P

Are you using a pacifier? She could just want the comfort of sucking. Which disposables are really helpful for since she can eat her meal and keep sucking without getting any nasty air.

My daughter was like that for a while. She still does it every no wand then. At 2 months she would eat as much or as little as she wanted at the most random times. She's pretty much every 3 hours now. But, she has her off days where she's just everywhere.
