See, now, the thing about certain incidences of pain is the way they happen so quickly you're left wondering if they happened at all.  The hurt is sharp -- it's a bite, a slap, a pinch -- and fades but does not linger.  And as you stand there breathing your quickened breath you wonder if you really felt it at all and then you key in on what you are ( Read more... )

the subtle use of "managed pain", how effective it can be.
I often wonder if the proper use of pain can be employed to be "distracting", to make one defocus on the immediate sensation at hand, so that when the pain subsides, the good sensation can be rediscovered and enjoyed as if for the first time.

(man can I ramble on and not seem to make any sense ...)
