Orange Juice and Chocolate Doughnuts
STEVE SUSSKIND: 1945-2005
While browsing through different Friday the 13th websites the other day, I was saddened to learn of the passing of one Steve Susskind on January 21 in an automobile accident in Sunland, California. Now who is Steve Susskind you ask? Well the name might not be familiar, but any true horror fan worth his weight in hockey masks will recognize him as shopkeep Harold Hatcher from Friday the 13th Part 3 (1982), who ran the Crystal lake Grocery Store with wife Edna. Yes, the guy who after feeding his fish, looked at the fish food container and popped some in his mouth only to spit it out after reading one of the tasty ingredients was "Day Fly Eggs."
Harold, who met his untimely demise by a cleaver to the chest, was the lucky first victim of the movie, followed by Edna courtesy of a rod through the back of the head.
Steve also had a reoccurring character on the television series Married... with Children from 1987-1994, playing Al Bundy's friend Barney. Him and Al(along with other friends) were founders of the anti-feminist group "No Ma'am"(National Organization of Men Against Amazonian Masterhood).
Perhaps you caught his small role on Friends as the Priest in the episode where Chandler and Monica get married? Well neither did I!
His TV guest roles are numerous, but just to name a few: The Facts of Life, The Jefferson's, Tales From The Crypt, Cheers, Rosanne, Melrose Place and Seinfeld.
Also doing more movies, he had a role in Star Trek V: The Final Frontier(1989)
and lent his voice to the animated movies Osmosis Jones(2001) and Monsters, Inc. (2001). Thats just to name a few of the movies he took part in.
To me Steve will always be remembered as Harold from Part 3(a movie I pretty much grew up on and my personal favorite of the series) who only wanted nothing more than to eat his chocolate doughnuts and jar of peanuts with some orange juice to go along with it - while being hassled by Edna about watching his weight! (at least that's how I see it).
